White Bass and Crappie

Fairly new to crappie fishing here, mainly bass fished up till now. I mainly fish the feeder creeks into the Arkansas river and have been catching a few crappie up until now. Went out the other day and could not buy a bite until i motored over a school of something and dropped down and ended up catching a limit of white bass. Was talking to some guys at work and they mentioned that the white bass will run the crappie out of their holes. Is this true?

Man I dont know. I have caught em together before and never knew what was gonna bite my hook next. Seems like they would get in ur hook first because they r way more aggressive. Maybe someone else can help ya with this one.

Not so sure about that, I catch both Crappie and White Bass at times where the baitfish are. But have heard same thing about baiting spots for Catfish and running out Crappie , all I can say is Bull Crap . I catch Crappie on my baited Catfish holes every summer. We used to see schools of Gar surfacing in the river in hot summer , fished right through the Gar catching Crappie and of course Gar.

I usually find big crappie in the same spots I'm catching whites. They're both feeding on the same bait fish in those areas. Your friend has missed some great fishing if he thinks the whites run off the crappie. I like finding whites because I know the crappie are close by feeding on the bait fish.

Thanks for the info guys! That's what I was kind of thinking in the back of my mind was that they are both there for the same reason to find food!

A Trick a local Crappie fishermen showed me on our home lake is when you catch a white bass from a tree top or brush pile. Put them in your live well,cooler until you get through fishing the tree or top. If you turn them loose right after catching them they will go right back into the tree or brush pile. Take them down the lake or river then release them.

Sure hope they are White Bass. The White Perch is very similar and when they get in the lake they will wipe out the white bass and may have a bad effect on the crappie. They are actually in the bass family being most closely related to the Striped Bass. They have become such a nuisance in the SC lakes that the DNR delisted them as a game fish and there or no limits on them.
On the plus side, they are good eating and if you get into a school of them you can catch a cooler full as fast as you can drop a line in.
We use to go to Santee Cooper each March for the White Bass spawning run and catch a bunch of fish. We have not seen one in 15 years, once the perch got in there.

I think we call them yellow bass? In sippi - Strokers . how do you cook them.?

Yellow Bass and the White Perch are different fish. We have Yellow Bass on some lakes and they are smaller than White Bass . Our Game and Fish Commission removed limit on them here. As far as I know we don't have White Perch.

Unfortunately we do have some white perch in Arkansas. They came down the Arkansas River from Oklahoma. There abundance is not high yet.
