Shallow Crappie

After spending a little time in the duck blind on Saturday morning, I headed in to our camp and grabbed one of our 10' boats and slid it in the back of the truck. I grabbed my jig pole and a tray of jig heads and tubes and headed to our barpit for a couple of hours. We've got some brush tops in the barpits and I proceeded to work them.
First thing that slammed my jig was a 3+ lb bass. What a ride he gave me in that 10' boat!! The thing I noticed about that fish was its color. It was beautiful with nice olive color on the top of the back and very defined rich black lateral lines. A coloration that would be seen in warmer months for sure.
I skulled my way to the next top and was greeted with a solid thump from a solid 1 lb crappie. Checked it out and released it. I eased that jig back in and pulled out a second nice crappie( it was a twin to the first).
I continued working some of the tops and had a decent couple of hours of catch and release fishing. I found out the old skulking arm needs a little work.
The fish I caught fell to an 11' Grizzly elite pole, 1/16th ounce unpainted jig head with a bronze hook and a black and chartreuse Arkie pro tube in 2-3 feet of water. With the majority in 2' of water. No pictures as I don't like to carry a phone when fishing in the 10' boat. Things tend to get wet in a small boat.
With these warm spells don't forget your old favorite barpit or pond. Those shallow water crappie have to eat to!

Matt, it's about 3 or 3 1/2 feet at the deepest. Stays that depth most of the year. Fishing water of that depth and shallower is where I cut my teeth.

Great way to spend an afternoon. On the Bass coloration . I used to fish some ponds for big Bass in winter. In some deep ponds they would have little color to them. But if placed in an open livewell where light hit them after a short time those beautiful colors returned.
Sounds like a fine way to spend an afternoon. You got it rough having to Duck and Deer hunt then fish on the same trip to camp.
I have a friend south of Carlise that has fish ponds and a big shallow reservoir that has a bar ditch where the dirt was dug for the leeve. Can be a blast catching Crappie in that thin water around Cypress tress.
