Where are we fishing this weekend?

I took grubby and his friend Al from OK City out on Greeson for a while this morning. We kept 15 decent crappie up to about 14-inches. We caught some around 15-feet deep but most were from 18 to 23-feet deep. Small Rosy Red minnows seemed to be their preference but I caught several on a 1/16th-ounce white/red/chartreuse hair jig. They sure were biting light and most never took our slip-floats all the way under. The bite should improve once we get this high pressure out of here.

because the boards have not been very active. I didn't get to go Saturday, I remembered that my grandson's first PeeWee basketball was that afternoon so I stayed home and went to that. It was a pretty exciting game. I went to Cane Creek this morning, I got there about 8:30 and there was only one other boat there and they were bass fishing. I fish a couple of hours and only caught 2, one was about 8" and the other one was small. I was going to try another lake but decided to go deer hunting. I was less successful at that. Hope everyone else had a better fishing weekend than I had. Let's hear some reports.

I loaded up and went down to Lake Columbia this morning. Got there and on the water around 5:45am. One person fishing from the bank with minners. Finally caught one crappie after daylight as another fellow come through putting fish after fish in the boat using a jig. he said anything chartruse, so I switched. I ended up keeping 9 fish. Caught 2 of them rosy reds, 2 on a salt and pepper tube and the remainder on red/chartruse. 1/32 ounce. Got some pictures at the skinning shed, but they were taken with my phone. Will post tomorrow when I get to work. (Don't have my datacable.)

Fished Degray Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours. Caught three small ones and a walleye. Fished around Arley Moore with shiners and vibric roostertails. I think the fish were there, they just wanted something a little smaller. Good to get out though.

It was a sad weekend for me as I found out I suck as bad at deer hunting as I do fishing. Its kinda like being in love with a woman that dont love ya back.

Ended up killing a doe but didnt catch any smallies out of the Saline River. Oh well guess I can drown my sorrows in some brown gravy tonight while eating some fried deer steaks.

The weather was beautiful, but the fishing was as low as it can get. For the first time in many years, I was completely shut-out. Didn't even get one good bite. Willie got a pair of keepers, and that was the only fish put in a boat (out of about 10 boats) the entire time that I was there.

I think that the fish may have moved deeper. I could still find some hydrilla on the graph, but most notably around the stumps at 5' deep. For the first time, I actually got to see the bottom of the lake in some spots. If the hydrilla is gradually deteriorating, I think it is going to make the fishing out there much tougher. It's hard to fish (especially spider-rig) deeper than 5' out there because of all the stumps. I just hope that the crappie have not moved closer to the bottom.

I also noticed (for the first time out there) dead shad floating on the surface. I'm pretty sure this made the fishing what it was. I know that the ducks are constantly after the shad, but I haven't noticed any dead shad before, and from the looks of those dam ducks, they would lose a wing before they gave up that shad.

Oh well, I'll be back to try it next week. Hey Jerry, maybe we can make a trip out to L. Monticello sometime next week as well.

Hey Ceb, I went Sunday and it wasn't much better, Steve was there and he wasn't catching any. I think the really fast cool down of the lake caused a lot of shad to die off and the predators were probably gorged this weekend. It will probably be back shortly. The hydrilla looked to be a lot deeper than it has been, I caught the ones I caught about 8 ft. deep. I'll listen for reports on L. Monticello this week and post how they are doing.
