Took my grandfather to Shirey Bay on Tues. We attempted to spider rig. Water looked great; it was a nice day, wind wasn't awful but we couldn't find or get any fish to hit. I was fishing blind bc his fishfinder wasn't working. There were 4 other boats in and we never saw anyone else catch a fish either.
Took my dad to Lake Poinsett on Wed. and we spider rigged for the fist time ever out of his boat. He just bought hi-techs from Grizzly Jig last week and man they are nice. It made fishing so much easier having good rod holders. We didn't really find any fish until the last 2 hrs of fishing. We had to motor to the upper end of the lake to get out of the wind a little and control the boat. Caught 8 in the last 1.5 hrs once we did. We caught fish in 16-30 fow but to my amazement they were not very deep. In fact, I don't think we would have caught any at all except my dad just lazily let a vertical jig set up hang off the back of the boat and it couldn't have been running more than 5-6 ft deep and that is the rod we caught our first 3 fish on. So, I switched a few rods to the hot color or something similar and shallowed up and we started getting bit. Then we had to leave!
We have never done well at Poinsett and we didn't kill em Wed. but we will be back. We both have the spider rig bug now. I am fairly certain we fished under the fish the first half of the trip. I would have never dreamed the fish would have been suspended that high in the water column in such deep water with 41 degree water? I guess I have a lot to learn. BTW, the hot jig was Midsouth Tackle Purple/Char w speckles.
no matter what I'm doing, I've got hunting or fishing on my mind...
