Thanks for all the comments guys. Even though it's a brand new starter I'm going to try some light oil in the morning if not later tonight due to weather in the morning. It's a 1990 model 150 mercury xr4. It spins fast, just won't twist up to engage the flywheel.
Skeeter, stick a voltmeter to the leads going to the starter... Make sure you have power, should be 12v-13v if I'm not mistaken. If you've got power there you know it's a starter issue... If not it's obviously an issue between there and the battery.
I had that problem a few years ago like that and now I put a little three and one oil on the spindle up to the flywheel once are twice a year. No problem, since
x2!!!! 13.6 if battery is hot. Should work down to about 11-11.5Quote:

If it is new starter I would suspect the battery or connections.

had the very same problem, and know others who have. it had to be worth a shot.
I've had the same problem on a brand new starter as well. I'm sure they just dry up sitting on a shelf. Oil it up good, then put a little up pressure on the bottom of the gear with a flat head and bump the starter a few times. Should engage. May take a few tries. Once we got ours broke loose it has worked ever since. But, if you don't have a good enough charge then that could cause the same issue.
Was that new starter rebuilt?
At least check the danged battery before we All go crazy!!!!!! :-)
Ok, checked all 3 batteries by putting a load on them, all checked good. I took jumper cables and tried to hook to battery then directly to starter but when I tried to hook the ground to motor block it was hot before I even touched the hot cable to anything....never figured that one out. I did have a boat mechanic tell me my ignition switch could cause it too. Getting up early tomorrow to take the boat somewhere to get them to fix it. I'll definatly post what the problem was to help others out, this has been a fight and apparently it's smarter than I am cause it has me stumped.
