Get the terrova. I pilot if possible.
x2 !!!!!!!
This is JUST ME........but when I bought my boat, I got a lot of advice like the above, to get the electric ipilot thingy. So I got it. It took me 2 months to finally give up and trade it in on a Minnkota Maxxum cable steer. I got tired of getting up out of my seat and walking all the way to front of boat and lifting the TM straight up in the air, with both hands, and stowing it, before I could then walk the length of the boat back to steering wheel to leave.............whew. I also didn't like the way it turned on and off........ I wanted to be in control of on and off,and the way I fish, I need on/off to be instant and constantly changing (on, turn, off, on, off, on, off, on, turn, off, all in a few seconds)........and the power drive wouldn't do that. The only thing I liked was the flat foot pedal, but even that was harder to use in SOME situations.
If I'm actually trolling, which I almost never do, I just use the big motor. My 115hp 4-stroke will go slower than most trolling speeds, and makes about as much noise as my TM does!!! I always thought "Trolling Motor" was misnamed. I think they should be called "Sculling Motors!"..... :)
I single pole 75% of the time. Thanks for all the advice, I'll prolly go with the cable steer after listening to everyone.
Another option Dicks in Conway has variable speed hand control tm. You could single pole with that and the variable speed would be awesome for trolling. Can spin the head around and mount it on your transom for pulling out the back. They are pretty cheap to compared to most foot control
I am in the market for a new trolling motor and was looking at a Powerdrive V2, 55 pound thrust until I saw this thread. I have used only cable driven trolling motors in the past. The reason I was looking at a new one was for the ability to use copilot/ipilot for trolling. What would you suggest someone do that single poles a lot in the spring and then trolls a lot summer/fall?
I have the power drive v2 with co pilot. For spider rigging and long lining I really like it, but I am torn because I like to single pole as well and they are not the best for that. Copilot is the only way to go the foot pedal sucks.
