Old School Secrets

I know of a few gents that would be over twice my age if they were still with us that fished and hunted year round and I think one of their best kept secrets would have to be how they managed to get out of the house so often and never came home to bags on the porch :) I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that these gentlemen fished and hunted to feed the family, not for the sport of it.. Or likely it was a combination of the two! Anyways, makes a man appreciate what we have and the fact that the majority don't fish because we have hungry families anticipating our catch and relying on us but instead we are blessed to have the opportunity and ability to enjoy the sport of it (even if it involves minners lmao).

Take a kid fishing and better yet take him/her AND another kid fishing even if it's one you hardly know. It can have more of a positive affect on their life than you may ever know (trust me I know!)

Here my dad fished cane poles and minners trolling , when he caught a Crappie he would toss out a hunk of Styrofoam on a string and a brick. Much of the time we has the whole lake to ourselves. No trolling motor , depth finder , and no gps. A 14' flat bottom boat sculling paddle, , bucket of minners and a pile of cane poles to place in pole holers. drifted or paddled slowly over creek channels and stump beds. Stopped fishing most days when minners ran out or cooler was full.

I grew up fishing Nimrod back as far as I can remember. I fished with my dad and him buddies one had a cabin at cotter Cove and still does and the boats were simple Aluma crafts with 20 Mercury's and a paddle. They would set out trot lines in the river and a ton of yoyos in the buck brush. When I look back on it I loved running the lines and yoyos but wasn't much on the pole fishing all day long but man could those guys catch fish. They fished a simple rig a heavy lead sinker with the tabs on each that folded over the line and a big gold crappie hook and when u got hung in the buck brush just lift up and down and it would come off except for a kid man I got cussed a lot for not figuring that out. I would give anything to have one of those old crappie camp weeks back.

I love to see and visit with old school crappie fisherman. As a kid I grew up sittin on a cooler behind my grandpa or grandma and listing to all their stories. They alway fish in seperate boats. If you've fished Conway or overcup very much you've seen em. They will be in his flat bottom with her two man tub stacked inside till they get to where they're fishin then shove it off and start rippin lips!! If u get a chance to visit with em it would be worth payin attention. Very nice people and always have slab crappie in their boats. Not too bad for being 80 and 82 yrs old. I still fish around em every chance I get. Great memories.

I know your grandparents well, well I at least know who they are and I will bet one thing against any mans money, they have caught more slabs out of Conway than anyone else. I have seen them catch crappie when no one else on the lake can. And if you see one of them, the other is not to far away..... They are a great story.

I too have met your Grand Parents...Great Folks and i always keep an eye on what area of the lake they are fishing if I see em. They get after em now.

Midsouth, I'm gonna say that'd proably be a pretty safe bet!! Lol!! And I'm with ya crappie pro, they do get after em!! They don't take to the cold like they used to, but he said today it was about to get warm enough.
