    Default Question for BigBen7

I think the Crappie I filleted out of Dardanelle are healthier (fatter). I noticed the fillets have a yellow tinge compared to most I catch here. Could eating so many Shad or being so fat be the reason? I've seen in the past Catfish below the dams over there seem greasy . I was told it was caused by being so fat eating vast amounts of Shad.

Nimrod, I would guess that could likely be the cause. I don't know besides fat what would cause the meat to have a different color to it. I have not necessarily seen this in crappie, but I have definitely seen large catfish with literally gobs of yellow fat in the body cavity. I can't vouch for the river for sure, but I've been hearing all year that shad on the Arkansas seem to be at epic proportions this year.

    Now Cray and BRM,
Ain't nothing wrong with those Dardanelle fish. Y'all pull them big ol translucent fish outta water that looks like chocolate milk all the time and eat em. Them MS crappie will grow from 12 to 13 inches in your live well and that ain't natural. Haha. Just cause you can see through em to check em out don't mean they're any healthier. Heehee.

All kidding aside I fished Dardanelle for the first time yesterday and was impressed. Caught more and better fish than I expected and the fish were colored out very well for this time of year. I guess that clearer water lets em get a sun tan. :D
