Default spider-riggin for shallow water slabs !!!

i am going to do a how to section on spider riggin for fall fishing ,i will do a small paragraph dailey to i get it coverd !!!late fall and early winter is the season that some crappie fishermen seem to forget , they get buck fever or it's to cool to fish. for the avid crappie fisherman this is when the weather changes from hot days to cold nights and cool days, the perfect fishing weather. the lakes become almost empty, very few fisherman on the water. i love this time of the year. this change in weather and water temperature cause something to happen in the crappie psych, the move from their deep water hide outs to shallowwater hold ups ready to load up with their favotite food SHAD. crappie start the winter gorge, they try to eat as many shad as possible in order to build up weight for the up coming spring spawn. the late fall and early wintercrappie transformation is caused by the shad migration . shad begin to travel when the water temps start to drop and the crappie will tag along. it's like spring timt part two. crappie will go behind shad in areas almost to shallow to flot a boat. i have caught crappie in less than 18in of water.we now a technique know as spider riggin.we move both seats up front and use very long poles (14-16ft) placed in our rod holders, with 10-12lb test line and a dbl minner rig or jigs with crappie nibbles . then we gradually move at .3 to . 5 mph easing along shallow flats or break lines. we try to find an area of the lake identical to where we fished in the spring.look for creeks that run off the main channel. if the area contains bait fish you will find crappie. check your depth finder continually looking for shad!!!when we are on our spots or on a new lake look for gulls or crains these birds are a thousands times better than any fish finder or any electronics on the market.when you see these birds in a certain spot you can bet shad are close by!!! to be continued tomorrow with part two !!!!!

    Meatgetter,

Thanks for the information and taking your time to do this for us novices....I am heading back to Nimrod Friday morning to fish on my way to Booneville for the weekend. We kept 14 last Saturday 10 to 12 inches long.....fishing 4 to 6 ft deep draggin jigs, jigs tipped with minnows and jigs under a cork.....slow going and when the wind came up at about 20 mph....it stopped for us...guess they don't like baits moving 15 inches vertical in the wind....

Noticed that Midsouth Man racked em and stacked them that day....he had a great catch.

yes they do move shallow in fall just as they do in spring. We find with low oxygen in hottest summer days they sometimes move shallow then too here.
