Theres a couple lakes like that around here. Only they have a line of poles on both sides of the channel. Old guy told me that they used them to stretch nets across the channel and catch buffalo. I don't know. I 've fished em and they're are some fish around them sometimes, but my experience, its best to cast with a spinning reel and bring it back through slow near the bottom.
The cane was put out by yo yo fisherman. They have had a row of cane poles out down that stretch for as long as I can remember.

I've seen the same thing at Midway. Those pieces of cane would hold a few fish especially in the early summer.
X2 on they being used for yo yo's. First time i fished that lake a couple guys that had a cabin whr yo yo fishing those tall cane sticking up. We whr jigging brush and doing fair but nothing to brag about. Nice looking oxbow tho. Seemed to get fished pretty heavy by the locals to me and never went back. Im sure its real good at times if you catch it right.
Yes, especially when the water is low. Also when its cold I have watched them catch them like crazy off of them in hurricane. I was duck hunting one day on one of the small lakes and their were guys crappie fishing the middle on old cane poles wearing them out.
I'm sure the canes are all the things you guys say but just to add information, I've seen them used on salt water flats to mark channels where it is safe to run at higher speeds.
possum they place these cane poles on the bank of the main channel on these oxbows and yes it serves more than one purpose!
