:donoMatch the Hatch. Just like trout fishing. If it's early before the spawn bigger minnows will match the bigger shad. After the shad hatch they'll be more aggresive towards smaller minnows. Or you could always follow the old "BIG BAIT...BIG FISH" way of thinking.
I've heard people talk about this before, same with jig size, but you know as well as I do, that if a hungry crappie is in a tree top, and a 2 1/2 " minner swims by, he ain't gonna wait for a 3/4" minner. And Nimrod, if these little dinks on the river aint scared of a minnow, y'all got nothing to worry about over there. Only thing that limits the size of the minner is the size of the floater.:biggrin
We have a Honey hole,community hole or any other name you wan't to give it on our local lake"Home" ever local crappie fishermen knows about it has a single cedar tree it has crappie on it about every month of the year.When you go to the lake their is at least one boat if not two and on holidays we have seen party barges and boats tied to the party barge.These fish are fished so hard you can't hardly get them to hit artifical baits if you don,t have small to med rosey red minnows small hook not gold or red you are not catching fish.Hardly ever a crappie over 10" it is fished so hard. One local crappie fishermen buys his minnows by the pound from a minnow farm and has an aqurrium he keeps his minnows in and then transports them to a round minnowtank he had built that goes in his boat to keep his minnows lively.He fishes almost every day except Sunday has for many years.Thats all he does is fish for crappie all he has ever done you can't get him to use a jig.Is on the lake befors daylite and is off the lake by Dinner.It is rare he doesn't have a limit of crappie.He is not after size "Hes says if it big enough to bite his minnow its big enough to eat.He says" small to med rosey reds"!!!!

2X...at least that's how it seems to work up here where most of the waters I fish are pretty dern clear.
I use minners in the late winter months and I prefer 2 1/2"- 3" minners. I do not like the "pin" minners they have around Reelfoot, but sometimes that's all you can get. Clear water, murky water or muddy water, I use the same minners.
