Well, as some of you might remember, almost a year ago I bought a 15' Monark and completely re-did it. From paint to wiring to carpet, everything was redone. Did all that work just to find out the lower unit was bad on the motor. Needless to say, I was severly broken and more or less just mad and set it aside. About three weeks ago I decided I had neglected it enough and got into tearing the motor down and fixing some problems. I started with replacing the forward gear, cluch dog, a few seals, and some bearings. Didn't think it was too bad considering i had never torn into an outboard before. I get it all back together only to find out I had shift rod problems. I guess Johnson decided to be cheap on some items and found out that the shift rod itself was metal but the bracket that holds the shift handle on is plastic. Over the years the plastic piece wore out and was now just spinning on the metal rod causing it not to shift. After another $100+, I proceded to tearing the motor completely down. Now that was fun. There's nothing like having an outboard in 15 pieces in the back of your boat and wondering if you can get it back together. So fast forward to today and I now have a complete, running motor again. Honestly have to say I am glad I am not an outboard mechanic. I had a video but I'm pretty sure ya'll know what a running outboard looks like, lol. Anyways, just wanted to share an accomplishment with ya'll and also to say, I'll see ya'll on the water!
And just so there's some pics to look at, here's a before and after of the Monark.

My hat's off to ya for tearing into the motor and putting it back together again, sucessfully! Hope you have no more problems come up. Just where to fish.
It sure looks good, and I know it feels good to accomplish a task,,and even sweeter if it was something you hadn't had experience in.
You done good, Deep Fried! You should really be proud of not only the boat, which looks great, but on tearing that motor down, finding the problem, getting the parts and putting it back together. If I tore my motor apart, I doubt a mechanic could put it back together!!! Good job! Thumbs Up
My wife keeps saying I never listen to her....... or something like that!
now slime it up!!!!! looks good, nice job!!!

Thanks fellas! I've tinkered with small engines before but nothing like an outboard. On top of that, I'm more of an auto body guy than a mechanic. I guess I could at least post a pic of the motor. It's an '81 35hp Johnson Seahorse. Hopefully next weekend I can take it out. I had it out on the water after I finished it but never got it over half thottle with the lower unit messed up. Anyways, here's a pic of the motor. Just ignore all the black fingerprints, lol. I might clean them off. Thanks again guys.

Job Well Done. Just remember to break in the new parts in the lower unit. The 10 hour break in period on a new engine is also for breaking in the lower unit!!!! Take her easy for the first 2-3 hours. Treat it like a new one!!
BTW, your boat looks great, you need a job? LOL
