    Default AGFC Stocked crappie

The AGFC stocks crappie at a lot of lakes and I've been told all theirs from the Hogan Hatchery in Lonoke have a single visible line that starts around their forehead and goes strait down for about an inch. Anybody ever notice this or heard of this?

They are called Blacknose Crappie. They are merely a genetic color variation of a black crappie. There has been no scientific evidence that these fish are geneticially superior to a normal black crappie or any other crappie for that matter, contrary to some rumors out there. Hope this helps. I got this info from a friend of mine who is a fishery biologists for MDC.

I can only tell you that oz. for oz. they are the fightinest crappie that swims...we used to catch them upwards of two pounds in my home lake, lately, about 3/4 to 1 1/4 seems tops.

Now that is interesting and illuminates the value of this forum. Blacknose Crappie, I never knew. I've fished all my life but have learned so much just reading these posts every day. I hope someone will post a picture of a Blacknose Crappie maybe next to a "regular" Black Crappie.

Same fish just different color variation. We catch lots of black Crappie but only a very small percentage have the stripe.

I catch a lot of them in Ouachita. Had a handful of them last weekend. My understanding is the same, just a black crappie with some jewelry.
