I run a HB 898 and love it. With all the bells and whistles on it you might not think you will use it. I never thought I would use the GPS as mush as I do. I fish a lot of shallow lakes also but I like the idea that when you mark sub structure and mark it it is always there. That cuts a lot of searching time that can be used to fish. Spend a little money now and you wont have to later. I dont know if you hunt but I compare it to a scope. Spend twice as much as the gun cost.

I fish bigger lakes and fish a lot of brush that is in open water and the GPS really makes it nice. I can run right up on my waypoint, throw out a marker and go to fishing. The DI really helps me determine if there are any fish or bait fish near the cover though and I've truly learned that it don't lie. I'm so confident in it anymore that if I run over a brush pile and don't see anything that looks like fish I just drive away and go to the next spot. With traditional sonar I was always left guessing and had to spend some time fishing a spot for I decided that it was or wasn't holding fish.
Thanks. That is exactly what I was wanting to know. Thanks to everyone else who replied also.

I just got the Humminbird 597 ci HD DI GPS combo and an I-Pilot to add to my trolling motor, but I'm just now getting them installed and can't report yet. I do have high hopes. I got a good deal on the H-bird, too, from J & H Electronics which I learned about on this site.

I just bought a humminbird 596 hd di unit. My transducer shield and saver trolling motor mount just came in so ive yet to try it out but I'll report back. Shouldn't be long before I got it all hooked up.
