i usually fish 4-5 times a year, always crappie fishing. the problem is i have never jig fished for crappie, as i have always used minnows. this year i will have plenty of time to time quite a bit more. im just needing a little help. Any ideas to get started would be greatly appreciated. thanks upfront!!

There are so many ways you can fish a jig it's almost endless. Vertical in deep water, under a cork, dipping with a jig pole, tipped with a minnow, drop shot style, trolling, spider rigging, and the list goes on. If you tell the guys here a little about the lake you fish and what water depths you typically work I'm sure someone will give you some pointers. You could start by just fishing them in the same way you fish your minnows and in the same places.

Start with the right color. Dont go crazy (yet). Red/chart, Blk/chart, Wht/ chart, Blu/wht, Pink/wht. 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 jig head. With the spawn getting near its a great time to get some jig time in. Use the 1/16 oz weight to get started. Get use to how it feels. Stick it in some brush in the shallow water and get the feel of it bouncing off the limbs. You have to learn how to get it unhung without disturbing the brush. Pull the line all the way down till you hear it click when the eye hits the jig head. If your not getting hung up your not fishin were the fish are.Good luck to you.

I am a minner fisherman and proud of it. However, Saturday was a jig day and they would out fish live bait 3 or 4 to 1. It's another tool to put in the arsenal and most of the regular posters are better at it than I. Go get you some in the colors that Billy mentioned and go fishing.

Many moons ago, the greatest improvement to my jig fishing was caused by buying a graphite jig pole...I suggest a 10 or 11 foot...the difference in feeling the thump is unbelieveable...if you already have a graphite jig pole...nevermind...
Save the planet, it is my favorite place to fish...
