ALWAYs and I do Mean Always, make the wind your friend when on the water. We do this by trolling the nose of the boat into the wind, when spiderrigging or verticle jigging allowing depth/boat control and using the wind as our brakes keeping our bait in a certian spot . By throwing out drift socks or chains to slow us down with the wind or casting our bobber cross/down wind to let the wind push a jig and bobber along/across a sweet spot. The only time I say heck with my friend the wind is when it gets past 20-25 MPH then i concentrate on wind protected banks or go home. One thing to keep in mind is always check the weather and what boat ramp you want to use, If you know its going to be a windy day try to launch your boat in the most wind protected spot you can find or a spot you know the banks will be protected when you come in that afternoon. You may just save your self allot of heart problems at the end of a great fishing day. I know this isn't always possible but I will travel a little farther to launch my boat if I know the boat ramp I want to use is going to be pounded by White Caps when I come in from fishing.
Wind will always effect shallow water crappie more than deep water fish thus making our presentation even more important when fishing less than 10 feet deep.
Seems to me from my experiences that any sudden change makes a difference. I never do well on glassy water either.
Not sure about the wind , sure i like a little breeze and chop. Not so sure about the fish. Two weeks ago the shade is what killed us . We were in a private lake (close near home) and went for a couple of hrs. Bam, bam bam, we were on the crappie . Was a bluebird day , light wind and plenty of sunshine. At about 445 our little honey hole went into the shade , we went from bites nearley every cast to nothing in 5 mins !! im serious , Bam, bam was gone !! We fished another 45" and only caught 1 more fish after our spot went to shade ?? go figure ?? Ended up with 30 keepers , sorry no pics !
