Default Observations / Lessons From A New Lake

I've been fishing since I could stand up, but nearly all my fishing has been done in the river bottoms or Peckerwood Lake. I decided to expand my horizons and Lake Conway was the target. I had never fished it and since it was only an hour from where I live I decided I'd learn it. I've learned a lot about that place in the past few years - thanks to all that have helped me out and a good map! Here's a few observations / lessons from my time over there. 1. One man boats have the right-of-way. No questions asked. It doesn't matter if you've been on the same 10' x 10' patch of pads for 2 hours, you must yield to them. 2. I wish that lake was about 30 miles closer to where I live. 3. I'm sure proud the AFGC built that lake, although a lot of people lost their land in the process I guess. 4. Sure seems strange driving through the city to get to a fishing hole full of cypress trees, pads, and gator grass. 5. That lake is slap full of crappie, although if it's not Oct - Feb I can only catch 10 - 12 keepers on a good day. 6. There is a very diverse group of folk that fish that lake. 7. A LOT of people fish that lake. 8. Minn Kota maxxums are fine trolling motors. 9. Catching 14" black crappie out of thick vegetation in 10" of water is something everyone should do before they pass. That's all for now, I have to get back to work. Carry on.

Hey TAV - I wish it was 2 hours closer. I have caught some nice black specks out of that lake. And yes yield for the scamps. Good observation and so true. Good people (Russ & Dan) full of info for the out of towners.

You're right BillyE, they're definitely generous with their knowledge. Mr. Jerry, all I can say is you've earned it since you're retired. That sounds like an absolutely perfect plan for your week! Very thankful for my job, but man I'd love to be doing that!

I've seen the ole timer, way back when, roll a PA cig while they drive so with a little practice I bet he could do it.

Guys, educate me a little, since the Mrs. and I want to try down there before the year is out. I'm all for being courteous and yielding where it is warranted, but I'm confused on the one man boat thing (scamps)?

My trucks got one of those handles on the dash. Think a vise would fit there nicely.

Well Said TAV, I remember last year I was fishing that lay down on the left half way up Gold Creek. When this fellow saw me catching fish and pulls right up to me in a scamp and starts fishing. I gave him a Tarnation Look and kept about my Biz... Hes looks at what I was using and quickly reties. Didnt help tho as he got to watch me pull slab after slab from that lay down. Later that day same scamp/same guy does the same thing under the I-40 bridge same results. HAHA I remember he made the comment "I just love following you around and watching you catch fish". LOL I was thinking boy aint that the truth.
