As most know I got drawn for an Alligator permit for public lands around lake Merisach. I went down to my buddy's cabin under the levee across from the lake. Bobby Joe is a fishing buddy that used to live there. We met up with 1low1ton (Sean) from Beardon and his buddy (Greg) from Wilmar. They furnished the boat, gator equipment, and knowledge of the area from previous Gator hunt.
Friday night was pretty much a bust with the cold weather. We did see a few small Gators. Saturday night was also slow at first but did see several later in the night. The only good gator estimated to be around 10' would sink when we approached. It was almost 3 am before we had a good chance. I hit the Gator and pushed it sideways with the harpoon. Surprized that it did not penatrate! So it surfaced and I hit it again with it facing us. Still no deal! Could not understand as I hit it hard as I could. Then try 3 it went under. Sean asked if I wanted to change harpoon points and proceeded to put on the one he killed his Gator with on his hunt. That time I gave it all I had and bingo. Sunk the harpoon in it's side but the tape held the point on the pole. We jerked it free and the Gator tried to leave with the rope and jug. The lily pads hung the rope and it surfaced. Well we pulled up and I shot it with a load of 4's in 3.5'' 12 gauge. Sean pulled it in and the high 5's and hand shakes began. I want to thank all 3 of my helpers. With the cold weather, hunting pressure , and heavy growth of water plants , I had decided not to hold out for a 10 to 12' and took this 7 1/2 foot gator. This Gator hunting is not for old guys, not sure if I could handle this type of hunt many more years. Tough standing on the bow of a boat with a harpoon. Sure had thoughts of hitting a stump and landing in the water. Maybe worse landing on a gator! Luckly everything worked out with few real problems.
