They will work for a while. They are considered a aoft woody plant so they will be prone to break down faster than your hard woods.

Cut down a few Crate Mertyles in the yard this morning. I thought they might make good crappie cover. I had enough for three buckets. Anybody know if they will work?

surely this must be an old thread. no one would cut down or trim back a crape mertle this time of the year. one of the most beautiful flowering bushes you can have in your yard. but yes, they will work for a while.
Hey duck I was thinking the same thing. I use them every year (in the spring) and will put out 5-6 buckets of them. They will work. I use them for shallow water cover
I know they make a dang fine whoopin' switch. My dad planted a Crepe Myrtle tree in our yard back in the early 70's because the neighbor got tired of me & my brothers coming over to cut our own switches off theirs. It's probably 15 ft tall and 30 ft round now. Beautiful in full bloom.
They are about the best bee attractors you can have close to your veggie garden to keep stuff pollenated too.
I've used them often but the beavers love them as well as the crappie. Blacklocust trees work the best, IMHO.
