I've heard of it, but I wouldn't do it. Form of unnecessary pain and suffering to me, unethical, whatever you want to call it. I would just feel funny about it. I don't like to see anything suffer needlessly. And yes, I hunt and fish, and have my whole life. Don't like to cripple and lose deer or ducks either. Makes me feel bad, and wish I would have never shot. I'm weird like that I guess.
But, as an afterthought, this was probably done back in the day when guys were actually HUNGRY and NEEDED something for supper. Maybe had a few kids to feed also. Then, all bets are off. Guys gotta do what he can to feed his family. I could do it in that case.
daddy did it years ago, but not trolling, find crappie tag it with line and bobber follow bobber,,,, Now In Missouri that practice is against the law, Why, well the rule reads release unharmed immedetaly if your not going to keep same,,, harm would be determined by the conservation agent, when you put the hook in the fish and let it go... so be carefull and check the regs in your state, but it did work
I never have tried that. Sounds like a good idea. I may have to give that a try in the fall
Sounds kinda goofy, just keep some marker bouys handy. Toss a marker out when you catch a fish and when you get out two or three markers ,circle or fish back and forth between them. We did that years ago with good results.
Years ago I read of an Arkansas bass pro that loved to crappie fish on the river. Whenever he caught a nice one out of the roving school he would quickly attach a swivel into the same hole made by the hook. Attached to this he had pre-rigged 10 feet of line and a small balloon. He would quickly release the fish while the school was still closeby. When the bite slowed down he would look for the balloon and it would be a hundred yards or so away. As he approached the balloon he would get back into the school. After fishing he would retrieve his fish.
i have see this work more than once !!!!!!!!!!!!! i also seen a man take a clear gallon jug placed a dozen minnows in it and tied a string to it and put holes in the lid and sank it in a tree top and went back later and caught fish , kinda like the lantern thing.
