Default Lake Charles and jug fishing

My wife wants me to take her to lake charles to camp and fish for a couple of days. So from what I hear the crappie fishing is not that great. So I thought about going jug fishing for some catfish. The only problem is I haven't jug fished since I was a kid. So any pointers would be appreciated. Is there a certain way to tie the hooks and how deep should I make the lines.

At Nimrod , we use noodles instead of jugs. Cut a swim noodle into 3 to 5 pieces , add about 6 to 9' of stout line and a hook. Real simple and stores lots easier without tangles. An old milk crate holds them great. My favorite bait is sunfish if there are Flatheads around.

Don't know a lot about it, but I can tell you what the big boys down at the pool hall said...Mr. Nimrod is right on with the bait, but the bait shop at Portia did have some small carp...yes there are some monster flatheads in Lake Charles (were 2 years ago)...depth to fish depends on so many things like weather, moon, depth of prey, etc...I would start at 4 or 5 foot in the mouth of coves or at the depth and location that you caught the sunfish...use at least 50 lb test...strong hooks...not an issue when the fish is pulling the jugs, but when you grab the line and pull, a weak hook could/may straighten...break your heart...go to utube and google jug fishing...always have a sharp knife close by...may save your life...
Save the planet, it is my favorite place to fish...
