It is a chain pickeral; and, I agree it taste very good. I am going to try Old Duck Hunters prep method. There was a YouTube video that showed how to filet a pike properly. But, I haven't been able to find it when ever I catch one of these critters.

dr. p. they have very small scales and you need to scale them when the skin is wet. all you do is scall them and fillet like you would a bass other than you cut the fillet off at the tail and leave the skin on. cut the rib cage out and lay the fillet skin side down and score the meat crossways every quarter inch or so. this cuts up the "y" bones where they fry up so you can eat them. i also fry the rib cage and eat it. waste not want not. this is the same way you do a buffalo fish which are also very good eating out of cold or clear water.

I might add that you don't stick your thumb in his mouth. Unless you have already beat him to death.

You are right !! Just made a quick type in and sent it. New it was Esox and just wasn't thinkn. I catch many of the Grass P in Reelfoot Lake which are always 6 or 8 inches when catching bait for line fishing. Caught the Chain in Harmon's Creek on Ky Lake and some nice size I might add.
Have you ever caught a Banded Flier ? Very similar to a Black Crappie . I was within 1 oz. of a world record about 5 years ago.
Good Fishn !

I catch a few picks out ofxbows,to me they are the bowfins twin brother when it comes to tearing the lure up.
Yes,I've caught the flier, last year was the first time I ever caught one,had to look it up on the pc to know what it was.
It was like wow its not a crappie and wow its not a bream, never seen nothing like it before.Caught like 8,only caught them in one spot on the lake, lake was high, have caught nomore in that lake.I have tried manyy times to catch another one to show others with no luck. For a panfish I think its the prettiest of them all when first seen.....
