Default crappie min. lengh on ark river

I talked to an arkansas game and fish guy who works the river and he is asking fisherman if they would like a 10" min. lengh on the arkansas river, his thoughts was that some people catch these fish and use them for everything from fertilizer in there garden to caning them (mainly non americans) and plus when you go to most lakes and they have the slot limit and then you have guys go to the river and get any size of fish and then they go to a lake and get a fish under 10 so he has to give them a ticket so if you would like email the agf.

I think he is ignorant. He is unlearned in the reasons for having a length limit.

well for the people who like to fish the river this would make bigger crappie plus when we have high water and large cfs this makes for a bad spawn and plus why would you want to keep a small dinky crappie let it grow up, plus he takes surveys of other fisherman everyday I think he might know a little more on this subject.

Why not a state wide 10'' min unless a body of water over populated?

I passed this thread along to one of the biologist in that district. You likely talked to a Wildife Officer. The biologist are the ones who sample the fish and would have a better idea then a wildlife officer about whether a regualtion needs to be in place.

    1. throwing back small crappie might have no affect on population size and could hurt it.
    2. high water floods more area and can help the spawn
    3. that small dinky crappie might be as grown as it will ever get. Might be old but stunted by overpopulation.
    4. Instead if surveying fishermen he needs to be surveying crappie in order to suggest a management tool like a size restriction.

How about a no cull 50 crappie limit?? Keep the first 50. Less competition for food so the survivors can have more to eat.

Had you rather have 150 two pound crappies in an area or 600 half pounders??

    1. you are fishing the river not a pond or small lake
    2. when fish spawn they lay there eggs and the high water wash them away and they are like we are a creature of habit and like a idea place to do things at.
3 again it is the river it is a big place and they can move
    4. they fish for all fish, shock them every now and then but the most important they talk to other fisherman and ask them about the size there catching (this would be surving the crappie) and fas as less competition why dont you just take all the bass and snake head out of the river and we can grow the world record! and hopefully it will be in the ozark pool!

I think he should just do his job and write the tickets,it doesn't matter if they are non-american or game law stupid americans, write the ticket. If they/we catch the fish does it matter how they/we use it as long as its not wasted.I love to see the flood waters in the spawn which means two things to me.First alot more eggs will make it as other bigger fish cann't eat them in the swallow flood waters.Second alot more fish to catch though out the year b/c alot people cann't fish the flood water for easy catching spawnning crappie.Flood waters do not wash the eggs away, fish are smart enough to lay out of the main flow.

Alot of lakes have slot limits on fish and some rivers have also, just b/c someone catches and keeps 6in.crappie in one lake doesn't make it legal in another lake.Game&fish prints bookets telling of these laws and where.Leave the river crappie alone,no slot,I'm glad they are people that like keeping smaller crappie nomatter for their reasons.

I am from Illinois. The state is 10" 10 fish and it helped a great deal. Lake Shelbyville recovered and is now 5 fish under 10" and 10 fish over 10". Clinton 9" minimum and 15 fish.
