    Default Lake Greeson Stripers

Haven't been after the crappie much since I got back from South Texas. Jerry has had a few crappie trips and done well. Lately, I've been busy striper hunting. Despite the "electrifying", wet weather we're getting our share.

    Here are a few pics:

    Scouting trip with Jerry:

Looks like your finding some nice ones. Trolling or live bait?

Live bait, 6-8" gizzard shad, 55-65' deep just off the bottom on down lines moving no faster than 1/2 mph. Locate the school, stop the boat, allow the lines to drop and hang on. Had one trip where we got 11 in 30 minutes. Just kept feeding them baits and the school followed us out to 90' of water as we drifted. Hammered 6 this morning in the first 10 minutes. Fish flopping all over the boat. Then worked hard for the next 2 hours for the last 3 fish.

    Default Looks like fun

    Hey Darryl
I remember yall coming to little Rock to get shad on the Arkansas. Our slack water harbor is full of them. I see big stuff attacking them occasionaly.
I have been hearing bad reports about theft in just about every ramp in the David Terry pool. If you decide to come get some more shad this year, give me a call. There is a ramp near by and i will secure your rig here at the port.

Hey Grizz, it would definitely be worth a try and I would love to find something as effective as live shad, which would make things so much easier. I have tried baits like that before and really didn't do so well. I'm spoiled, I know, and well is relative as compared. There are several folks here now fast trolling heavy bucktail jigs and catching a few but they mostly watch us load up then wave when we head back to clean fish. They don't get them down deep enough with the right amount of action.

Even saw a guy with downriggers and he wasn't using them even after I told him where they were. If he would use the equipment for what it's designed for and get into the school he'd probably get some. But he just wrote it off as a live bait vs. artificial bait difference and continued while his boys looked bored as.... I can sit relatively still and let the live bait work. He could have trolled the artificial as long as it was at the right depth. Without the downriggers and as fast as he was moving the baits couldn't have been more than 10-15' deep.

Anyway, I'll stay motivated for the live bait work and take satisfaction in seeing the kids faces when they catch their first big one.

Darryl, Goldfish are cheap and lot easier to keep alive. Ever tried fishing with them before? I know guys that raise them and that's only live bait they use for trotlines to Crappie. Just never heard of anyone using them for Stripers?

Yeah, I've used them and bream for stripers before and they catch a few, not like good ole gizzard shad though. I love'em on trotlines for flatheads.
