    Default boat motors.

Guys I painted my old Nissan 9.9 yesterday and I'm starting to think she ain't got much left in her. She's been a good one. So I been looking around for a new one and I found a few options. Tohatsu 20 HP 4stroke for 2820 to my front door. Tohatsu 25 HP 4stroke for 4700 but it is tech installed. Yamaha 25 HP 4stroke for 3300. Now I'm just looking prolly won't buy for a month or two. And I'd much rather buy locally. Questions are the 25 horse tohatsu and Yamaha (50 something pounds heavier than the 20 HP)worth the extra coin?. Do you guys think the performance gain( I don't know how much gain can expected from a 5 HP 50 pound heavier motor) is worth the money? This will be on a 1442 alumacraft alweld rated for a 25. Also the 25 tohatsu is efi. these are 15in electric start motors. What's yalls opinions on these motors and the performance differences? Also the 9.9 pushes the boat 25 to 26 mph with just me and a couple crappie rods. Thanks.

I'd go with the 20. Save money, save weight and not going to see any difference in speed or performance. Tohatsu builds the Nissan, some Merc's and some Yamaha's. Main thing on any of them is check the length of warranty. Think the Tohatsu has about the longest in any of your small motors. Nd that 20 will make your boat fly.

My brother has been using a Tohatsu 40 2 stroke for about 13 yrs in the brackish water around Lake Charles. He even pulls a shrimp trawl most years. It has been rode hard and still performs. It is on a narrow 18 ft local made boat.

I sell every model you said. Buy the 20hp Tohatsu. It's actually faster than the 25's because of the HP to weight ratio, Big throttle body, and it's excellent gear ratio. Don't buy the one online. It can cause you a few problems if you have an issue with it. They MUST be pre delivered by an authorized dealer regardless of where you buy it. The guys online don't tell ya that because Tohatsu/Nissan charge them back 75-100 dollars for you to take it to a dealer. Pay a little extra and get it from an authorized dealer like me. We do the pre delivery for you, and in my case, I hang it on your boat at no extra charge. Regular dealers have overhead, where online guys have a warehouse and NO service!!!

Buying from a REAL dealer will also get you much better customer service IF you need it. I'm always 2 weeks behind for an online engine repair (and the serial number will tell me where it's bought). MY customers usually get same day service no matter how busy I am unless it requires parts that are ordered!!! On the plus side, they hardly ever break.

Oh yeah, FYI, you might want to look at the new Suzuki 3 cylinder 4 Stroke 25. It 30-40lbs lighter than the ETEC, has 3 cylinders instead of 2 (for more displacement--which means more torque and power to the prop. In a 4 stroke, "There's NO Replacement for Displacement"!!!), and the HP to weight ratio is the best in its class!!! Should be a screamer of a 25. I have 3 on the way. Google Suzuki DF25A. Duck hunters are gonna love this engine!!! It's also battery less EFI so you can have fuel injection without electric start or a battery to carry. ALL of Suzuki's small portable EFI engines are battery less.

Thanks cray for your opinion, I was leaning heavy towards the tohatsu 20, overlooked suzuki but im checking into them a lil more. My ole 9.9 has been bullet proof but for the last year she's knocking and jerking at wot. BRM your a wealth of knowledge bud. I thought you know if ya buy it online who ya gonna deal with if ya have problems. Going out town for a couple weeks next sunday. Gonna be tied up good for the next couple months..... then I'm gonna be real serious about getting a motor in time for deer season! Lol I'll holla at ya when I get settled back down. Thanks.

Now if I could just learn how to apply it!!!

It's my job to help customers make an educated decision, regardless of where or what you purchase in regards to the marine business.
