I've only used it in salt water. Caught plenty of bait fish, shrimp, and mullet. At times when the shad get schooled up on top, you could probably get plenty of catfish bait.

Used one all the time for bait when I lived on the coast....... plus a push net to gather grass shrimp. Too old and decrepit for that kind of action now :biggrin. I have seen people filling iced chests with shad using a cast net in the eddys below dams.
PS: 8' is too much net for a 'ginner...... kind of like a rookie rigger starting with 8 poles!:yikes
Just learn how to hold it and anybody can do it. There are lots of videos on you tube showing how to do it. Here's a couple. ( I wasn't kidding about the teeth!!) http://youtu.be/q1dzZyHg2jM

Watched 10 hunnert videos and none of them seemed to help much. Finally found the video from Calusa and it did the trick. Once I figured out how to balance on one foot and get the net between my toes, I was good to go:Rofl
Second video is how I do it, how I would explain it, and the results are just about the same.:biggrin
you should see the shiner fishermen down on the big o in florida throw one.
