Had this done Jan 23, 2012, by Dr. William Hefley in LR. Best there is. I have four small holes in my shoulder, can't even see 'em. If they lay you open, it's tough recovery. If arthroscopic, it's not bad.
I was on pain pills 7 days. After that, only ibuprofen. First week was a bear, trying to sleep. I was in a sling for ONLY 10 days. I did my therapy RELIGIOUSLY. Exactly as they asked. By April 15, I was fishing.
Takes six months to heal 100%. But my pain is gone, and I feel great. Best choice I ever made.
That's good to hear. I'm hoping to be able to dove hunt and fish at fall camp. It sounds like we had the same procedure so now I'm a little more optimistic. The sleeping is extremely difficult.
Ha. We have a loveseat recliner. Nothing in the middle. Mine was left arm. If I slept on left side, I couldn't get the lever to work to get my feet down to go to bathroom. If I slept on right side, I could work lever, but had nowhere to rest my arm. It was a bad week. But soon forgotten.
Hey Rookie,
In my previous life I represented several folks who had rotator cuff surgery. They all had physical therapy prescribed in their recovery. I have seen firsthand that the ones who had the best results and regained the most mobility were the ones who religiously followed the directions and did their physical therapy religiously, and did it properly, even though it was painful. I imagine Creek could give you some firsthand info on this point too. Maybe Steve (luvpt) will chime in here too, as I'm sure he encounters rotator cuff surgery patients daily in his practice. So grit your teeth and tough it out, but do it right and you should be pleased with the results. Someday, it will all be worthwhile to you. By the way, was it your rod holding shoulder? if so, what I said goes double!
What Ski said.
That said, let me give a warning. This is a Rule of Thumb, not some hard and fast info.
Knees? You can work them double hard and get double benefit. Shoulders? Nope. At first, they will have you doing the tiniest little things. You'll think "Man, I need to step this up and get better faster". DO NOT DO IT. Do what they say, the way they say, and no more, and NO LESS. Trust me on this.
But for sure, get it done arthroscopically. If your doc won't do that, change docs. Life is short.
I have the same four holes u spoke of and I can't imagine being cut anymore as bad as this hurts. I really appreciate the info guys and yes it is my dominant hand and I will do what I'm told so I can get back to fishing and hunting. I have about forgotten what it's like to do either one pain free.
Good advice from all. I got laid open, took four anchors to hold every thing down. Was immobile for six weeks. Whatever you do don't rush it. You should be good to go when the fall run starts!
