That is the Dobyns I have and it is a wonderful rod. It balances really well with a Regal 1000 on it. It really became a "go to" type rod vs being a jigging rod, or drop shot rod or whatever, it was just my favorite.
If you like Dobyns, you should really look at the TFO rods. They are somehow tied to Loomis, they are made in Korea (If I remember correctly) and and just a fantastic rod, that, I feel is hard to beat at any price without getting into the JDM stuff again.
Gwg, as mentioned earlier I’m also on the lookout for a 500 reel but won’t settle for less after all it’d be pointless to spend on a nice JDM rod ( damn rabbit hole!!) and then skim on a mid if not top-dog 500 reel like the Soare ci4…lol. Now it looks like I might have to go with the Nasci 500, a shallow spool out of Japan….it has that uber-poor man’s Stella look and will look awesome on my recent 4-10ul with this diminutive carbon-look handle:

Hatchetjack, you may have unraveled a lot of speculation among us 500-reel seekers, Sir. Is this a closed measure or extended if it's the latter i can picture it being another .5 of an inch shorter? Do you also own the Shimano ci4+ s408ul rod @ a mare 45 grams in weight? All said and done, pairing this Soare ci4+ 500s with a Gamakatsu luxxe yoihime Ten s48al @28g may be the lightest if NOT the world's lightest Ultralight combo....that's a crazy 168gram rod/reel weight!! MN, I had 4 avocets in the past and I’m not sure they were the model you spoke of. They were great the first couple of seasons and one by one they developed personalities that I didn’t like. Little things and they still caught fish but I wound up giving them away one by one. The one I have left rides a micro series rod I keep rigged with a slip float. Just input, not bashing any of them. I like my presidents too but a couple of them are getting sloppy in the gears from LOTS of use. I don’t believe the gears are very good machining or materials but it’s taken 5+ years for this to happen. Really liking the TSS and regal 1000 I had in my hands this morning, let’s see what it’s like in a few years.

Avocet RZ - Also known as the Avocet II - 4 bearings, aluminum spool - I have one in my 'backup to the backup' box. Fair, but not something I'd use for long term
Avocet RZT - Also known as the Avocet IV or Avocet Gold - 8 bearings, one of those in the line roller (a necessity for braid IMO), aluminum spool and handle. Pretty rugged and as I said, I'd put it against my President and President XTs and from my experience, it compares favorably.
I've been a Mitchell fan since I got an Abu-Mitchell 320 for my 8th birthday way back in (*cough*) 1967.
I hope they come out with something along the lines of the RZT again...great little reel for the price.

Yes, this is the 500. I purchased it to pair with a Tict Ice Cube. I have an old Shimano Ci4 1000FL that I just had rebuilt. It was/has been a stellar reel but I wanted to try another flavor. I have only fished the 500 twice, so not a lot of seat time, but I have no regrets. The feel is crisp, thought the handle will not rotate from the 9 to 6 position, for what that’s worth.
