I have the Troutist Wild 3lb and can’t wait to try it on my new rod. Almost time to spool it on! If Chris has what you want his shipping is way less than that. It’s good to hear Skeet is reporting nice handling with his Troutist.

I just got my Ballistic reel in the mail today!! I paired it up with the AREA super trout master limited that is 2.3lb test line.
This stuff scares me, it breaks so easily when I pull on it!! I'm going to try it out on Monday I hope. I understand that it is VERY sensitive and casts a mile. I just wonder if it will hold up to the fishing I do?? I'm not using a leader, going straight with it.
Tie a good Palomar knot to a buggy looking Panfish lure, set your drag correctly, and hang on. When that first Green Carp hooks up and makes a run, hold on and enjoy the ride.Quote:

Randy, can I get away with not using a leader on this hi vis ester line?? I'd certainly like to, but have you ever done it that way, or do you strictly use leaders?
You can for bluegill. I've done it and a palomar knot holds just fine. But I don't recommend it. I catch a lot of nice size KY bass fishing with the ester line and without a leader I would not be able to land those fish. This past Thursday when I caught all those crappie and Spots I also landed that huge drum. I had on a 5 foot section of leader and without it no way I was getting that drum in. Get into good shellcracker using that line with no leader you are going to get your heart broke...LOL.Quote:

All three of the JDM lines I have been using this winter are 3lb test or less. I do not use a leader, and tie the Palomar Knot for all three on to a 1/48 or 1/32 oz standard lead head jig. Never tried the loop knot on these small lines, I feel as if I am imparting plenty of action with the twitch and slow retrieve method to provoke a bite from my quarry. Pics to show...

9 and 10 inch Crappie and White Bass on the 3lb Area trout Monofilament line, again tied straight to baits using Palomar knot. If you have read any of my reports you will know that water visibility is not an issue on my area lakes, especially in the Spring so a leader is not needed. Now, for the all important Disclaimer.....I DO get my share of break offs from big fish, especially from the bank while fishing these light but super sensitive lines. Knot failures? Retie issues? Sharp Gill Plates and bottom structure? All plausible explanations but with the correct drag settings and the proper rod selection, you can take on those big bullies with the UL equipment, and enjoy the ride they provide. Others will chime in on knots and leaders, but I have not found the need to use them or tie anything else but a Palomar knot straight to the jig. Try it with and without a leader.

I only problem I see with that style of clip is that it looks like it would catch a lot of grass.
Those are neat but where I fish is so full of logs and tree branches it wouldn’t work for me.

Received a nice little package from Digitaka today. I am going to post my first impressions on the corresponding threads for the various items.
As far as the lines/leaders:
* Varivas Ajing Master Shock Leader 0.5 (2 lb) will be used with my Varivas Ester line 2.3 lb on my UL combo.
* Varivas Trout Shock leader for my mountain stream spinning combo equipped with 8 lb braid Varivas super trout advance
* Sunline FC sniper 4.5 lb Fluoro on my bass rod. No leader
* not sure about the 0.6 (3 lb) Varivas shock leader yet I just got click happy when ordering [emoji23]

Interesting that you would choose a 4.5 line. When I quit chasing green fish I was using 6lb mono and smaller baits like a 4” plastic worm and 1/32 bullet weight. Caught more fish than my friends and landed some over 5lbs. Refreshing to know that I wasn’t alone in that thought.
That specific number for the line is quite anecdotal actually. First Im able to spool the entire line on the reel with no leftover around the house. My finesse rod is rated up to 6 lb line so I wanted to go slightly lighter. Besides last year I caught a 3 ft striped bass trolling for crappie on a 4 lb test line lol [emoji13] and I figured I didnt need anything higher to catch Bass if the drag is properly set.Quote:

I figure with the bigger gear in the new Luvias.....the 4# test line......and the Corto rod I can pull them out of there. We will see. I will be able to use a spool off one of my new Ballistic FW reels if I want to use the Luvias fishing at other lakes where I dont have to use the 4# test line.

Stan I ordered the Owner 100mm Top Floats from Chris. https://www.tenkarabum.com/top-floats.html He was kind enough to test them out with a .5 gram jig head with a TM body for me. It has been years since I have dabbled in floats. Good ones arent cheap.....they werent cheap back then either. The Owner floats seem reasonably priced compared to other same style good brands of floats. I wanted to try some Acorn style but he is out...has some on the way though. I think if you use the Unitaka Braid with your float set up, you will be pleased with the strength and ability to get the fish moving. One thing I have found with the light and very small braid is that getting the weight set up correctly under the float to keep from having the float wrap around the terminal tackle either by getting ahead of it due to weight differential or wind drift. I have started using a sideways lob cast almost like a sidearm pitcher does the baseball to keep things in line, and to get some accuracy. Another thing new to me using the JDM equipment and the float rig is that the extra added weight of the float, your cast will sail out in a heartbeat, most of the time I will have to stop it using my hand to feather and close the bail. Everybody has their favorite knot. My favorite is the one I can tie with ease....LOL. Years ago when I fished NanoFil for 18 months straight I started using the 3 turn surgeons knot. It worked out very well and I have stuck with it ever since. While there may be knots that can go through our micro guides easier I don't know of a knot that is easier to tie...at least for an aging man with fumbly fingers. I have lost count of 20 plus inch Smallies I have caught with this knot...so knot strength has not been an issue.Quote:

I was using the FG knot to attach 3-lb PE to 3-lb FC but after having it slip a little and it not being a fast knot to tie, I also stating using the 3 turn surgeon knot for the PE to FC. It holds well and the leader more often breaks than the knot.Quote:

For those who may be interested. I spooled up the new Luvias 2000 with the Troutist Meister 4# test line I purchased from Chris. I also spooled up the Ballistic FW 1000 with the Unitika 3# test PE. Using the Major Craft Fine Tail as a test rod I put on a 1/64 TM jig head with TM body and went to work casting for distance. First the Troutist Meister line is just simply amazing with the low diameter. I was able to consistently cast the TM 45 feet with that line. In my opinion that is pretty darn good for a nylon 4# test line. The next test I was not so impressed...or should I say I was hoping for better results. Casting the Unitika 3# PE I got 50 feet. The only braid that has ever impressed me with casting distance was NanoFil....of course I no longer use it. The distance is certainly acceptable but I have constantly heard from folks who fish braid all the time that it always outcasts mono. I have never found that to be the case except with NanoFil. I can cast the Troutist Meister 3# test further than the Unitika PE. Was wondering if any who have these lines have done any distance testing.

On the water testing? Back yard testing? Would wet lines vs dry lines make a difference? I like the Braid, will choose it 2:1 over mono for most applications. 1/48 -1/32-1/24 seems to be my preferred weight range for cast and retrieve, and braid seems to be my favorite for these weights. For 1/64 I like the Red Eye 2.3lb. Ajing Master Ester, can detect a bite better, but I am always fishing shallow water with that light weight jig plastic combination. From a boat, casting distances are not as relevant for 90% of my applications, if I am too far away to reach a target, I just move a little closer. Water clarity and spooky fish is hardly an issue, however with that being said, one of these days I may fish on Norris Lake, a clear deep water lake that has a great population of Shellcracker. May change my tune then.
I was in the back just wanting to see how each line cast. Both cast just fine....I have no issues with the distance for either one. I am sure I will use braid more later in the spring. Funny how I fished with it for a constant 18 months straight and then quit completely. I much prefer the nylon when knowing Ill be getting into big fish. As you know ester is my number one preference but Im a firm believer an UL angler is in need of ester....PE......nylon and FC. I have a trout trip coming in a month out on the Little Red. Ill have all lines with me except the FC. Im fine catching the 12-14 inch fish but Im sure my nephew will want to go try for some trophy areas and Ill be forced to switch from the ester to the nylon. Ive hooked into a few of those out there and ester is just not the line to get into those in the current.Quote:
