JDM lines relating to panfish

Bob, the troutist wild I have is 2.5 and is as yet untested. I can already tell that the visibility will be just fine. Stretch factor will no doubt be more forgiving that the Ester y’all speak of.

Randy, I know that the Nanofil has a tough break point after wrestling with a whisker trout that went 3lb 9oz. Absolute ball, screaming drag! My first love is its casting, and I find I compare most everything to it. The 4lb Nano that I have on another rod, more a medium for my likes, casts very good also but I haven’t noticed the line sensitivity for breakage. That 2lb is just plain tender. If you see a fuzzy spot it’s time to retie. I think my pet fish and I will get along just fine with the nylon, they kind of strike with abandon. Thanks for the input, helps a lot.

JDM Nylon Revisited

As of late, I have been using the 2.5 and 3lb Ester lines for all of my bank fishing forays. Great casting distance, excellent bite detection, and just plain fun on the UL equipment. Last Spring I also purchased a JDM monofilament, a Varivas Area Trout nylon that is rated at 3lb

The one on the bottom right. I gave it one or two shots while fishing from the boat this summer, and just could not get past the stretch and muted bite detection. However ( there is always a but) I did not fish the line on the Olympic Corto, a great JDM rod for most targeted species in my area lakes. So after reading the posts of Alphahawk on here about using the appropriate lines for various situations, I decided to give the nylon a try again on the afternoon creek bank trips where the Temperate Bass have been eating my offerings with gusto.

Nothing big was encountered this evening, but the White Bass did not disappoint. Line stretching drag squealing runs were easily quelled by the line and rod action, a good drag is also essential. The bites were easily detected, just not as violent as with the Esters. Casting distance was equal to a little better, but we had a decent wind tonight.

I stuck a few Crappie, and the characteristic Thump was just not as evident. It was there, but I can just tell by the bite with an Ester if it is a Crappie, Bluegill, or White Bass. As the moon was rising with the darkness, the bite subsided

In conclusion, on the Corto rod the Nylon was not as bad as I remembered from the Summer. Lots of rain forecast for the next week or so, but I think I will keep the monofilament up in the front of the rotation for now. Give it a try if you are looking for a good JDM fishing line.

Thanks for this review, Stan. For you ester fans, at what water depths do you consider where ester may not be the best choice? For example, I’m specifically thinking shallower stream fishing. I get the sensitivity in deeper water, but in shallower rock bottom streams is nylon or FC A better choice? It’s all a trade off I guess.

I use the ester when I can. I use it twitching trout streams where the water may only be 2-4 feet deep....and of course on bluegill....crappie, no matter the depth. Using the ester....twitching a Trout Magnet for trout.....I miss far fewer fish than if using nylon. I go to FC or nylon if I am targeting bigger fish....meaning smallmouth....big white bass.

I am hooked on the Ester and Braided lines, but do see a place for the nylon monofilament. Rod sensitivity does seem to play a role in the transmission of the bite, and drag settings are paramount when tangling with the bigger bullies. Its a fun learning curve, and more questions are raised each time I think I have it figured out.

Thank you for the replies. I don’t know how much topwater stream fishing that you might like to do, but I’m thinking there the nylon would shine as a sinking line would most likely be counter productive. In addition, there isn’t much guessing on a topwater hit - just a try and avoid a heart attack!:)

Braid for a topwater bite is excellent. All my Bass friends use it and lock the drag down for the strike, then back it off for the fight and landing due to the no stretch. My local lake has Hybrids up to 20lbs, Stripers up to 40lbs and tons of White Bass. I keep a casting reel in the rod locker of the boat with braid and a topwater lure covered with a lure wrap ready for when they get out of line and start busting bait near or around my Panfish spots. I do not fish many trout streams, have not been bit by that bug....yet.

This has probably been covered and I missed it, but when tying on a shock leader to ester line, how long of leader are y'all using on average?

I probably use around a 24 inch leader... no exact science to it though..

If you read up on how long a shock leader should be it should go slightly on to the spool. None of us do that. When the Spots show up I will go to about a 4-5 foot leader. I have experimented a lot with this and the longer the leader it definitely gives you a lot more cushion to get in those bigger fish. But if I am targeting bluegill and or crappie I will use 2-3 feet.
