Thread: I hate braid

Hope it works out for ya! I too hate braid and have tried multiple brands from time to time . I love the sensitivity of it and am currently trying several different brands again and I keep going back to Berkley solar mono in the 6# test best line by far to me .I really like the vicious mono line as well but I ordered the 7# vicious braid really liked it other than it breaking so easy so I just took it off and tossed it in the trash couple days ago because of breaking off so many fish with it even with the drag set real loose. Just spooled us some spider wire and have broke off a couple fish already and purchased couple spools of the wind tamer braid but it’s on the stiff side .so I guess it’s back to the Berkley or the vicious mono for me.

If u can find gliss or nanofil. I’ve used it for years now it’s just hard to find.

I never really tried braid until this fall, and I'm still getting used to it. So far, I'm liking it for my crankbait pulling rigs, and I'm still judging it for my spider rigging setup--I'm not a fan of the wind knots at the tips, although I do light the sensitivity when livescoping. I haven't had a chance to try it on my ultralight casting or dock shooting rods yet.

That line added another 30 % casting a float. Added 10 feet skipping jigs under a dock. Release point was all over the place. That was my fault. The 4# broke more like 2#. Sometimes thats a blessing when you just want loose and re tye. The line wrapped around the eye twice in 6 hours.

If you pulling or pushing jigs with braid you wasting money and adding un necessary missery. My opinion.

Yes braid is more for casting and sensitivity.

Yes, I’m seeing that. Despite fighting wind knots on my spider rig rods, I do like the firm hook sets, sensitivity, and lack of stretching, since I also use those same rods for jigging.

I have PowerPro hi-viz 10/2 braid on one casting rod, and it's been on there for 10+yrs and has performed flawlessly. I don't use that outfit that much anymore, but when I did use it I could out cast any of my other outfits w/mono line and the same weight lure. Originally I used that outfit to cast 1/16oz marabou Road Runners or Charlie Brewer Whirly Bees ... one, to cast them farther - two, to be able to pull them free from snags. I don't remember ever "breaking off" on a fish, and rarely (if ever) did I have to cut the braid to get free from a snag.
On my Pushing rods I have 30# braid (10# test, I assume) that was on the reels that came with those rods that I bought off a friend. They're Line Counter reels & 10# test diameter line is supposed to be used for the accuracy of how much line you have out (according to the counter) They have 6# test mono leaders. No problems from that braid. (sorry, don't know the brand)

I think I've had maybe 2-3 instances of "wind knots" with the PowerPro braid ... but, after stopping using a wrist snap cast & going with more of a deliberate slow wrist cast, the wind knots ceased (as did the bait flying thru the line between the tip and next closest guide and the rod blank).

I haven't tried it with my Livescope, yet, as I'm perfectly satisfied with the 6# test Vicious I have on my Livescope Flippin' rods.

Personal experience has taught me to not wrap braid around my hand to pull a lure free, but use a small wood dowel or piece of wood to wrap it around. It's also nice to have a pair of Fiskar Child Size Scissors to cut the tag end "blunt", so that it's much easier to poke thru the small eye rings of small jigs. Other means of cutting braid tend to leave threads poking out of the tag end that make it more difficult to do that (since braid is so limp). I just like the Fiskar Scissors because they're very inexpensive (like $2 - $3/pair at Walmart).

I have Power Pro 30# on my trolling rods. No casting or retrieving, just drop to depth with leader at the end. Reels spooled in 2003 and 4.
