I tried dragging a jig just off the bottom in indian with no takers but did notice water conditions in cotaco were clearer than indian and tree top I caught the most off of was occupied just prior to me fishing it ....I think the guy was minnow fishing about 4-5 ft deep and the crappie had moved deeper by the time I got there...I had one on while he was still in sight. I had no idea how deep the water was but started with 9 ft of line out and was letting the jig fall naturally till I found bottom starting on the deep end of the tree and moving back till I found them...lots of hits, on the fall...mostly the dinks... keepers hit deeper and wanted to look at it a couple seconds....

I consistently find the Crappie 6 to 8 feet deep when I single pole and pull fish off trees that other anglers have just left.

I fished Indian yesterday from 12 till 5. A member and his buddy were coming in as I was unloading. They had a few and said the bite was better early during the rain. All I caught were gills and skipjack. I’ve never fished cotaco but thinking about trying it. Boss,sorry I didn’t recognize you. You look different in a car than in a boat. Lol. After reading DBs report I may have not tried them shallow enough. Those guys said they were catching about 8 ft so there and deeper was what I was trying. Don’t think I’ll ever get this stuff figured out.

Don't get discouraged, just lessen to the fish. I use a 1/32oz jig head when I can, and the 1" slider has a tail wagging as it slow falls. When the fish suddenly moved up in the water column, I noticed the fish were hitting it after it only fell a couple feet. If the fish hadn't been hitting the jig on the fall I probably never would have known. After the second or third fish hit shallow, I adjusted my depth and immediately started catching more fish. No big secret, just paying attention to the fish.

I like to start at a big laydown that extends into at least 10 or 12 feet of water. I'll usually start jigging only two or three feet deep and slowly work my way toward deeper water jigging deeper. Usually if a catch a couple at a specific depth it will be the same all down the creek. After I find the right depth, I will only fish that depth unless I stop catching fish. My favorite thing about Crappie fishing is always figuring out the puzzle, LOL!
