Wheeler Wildlife Refuge

Ive seen them in Flint creek, Limestone Bay area, Blackwell run,Piney creek, and White spring.....there is an established population in the Elk river also but not sure exactly where on the Elk....whenever the wardens have to trap one from a populated area such as Edgwater/Sunlake or cypress creek in the shoals, they transfer them to the Elk River....there are some old fish hatchery ponds above Elk River Mills and I wonder if that's the place...

A great place to wade is the old 20 bridge Limestone creek .You can walk and wade no trouble. Catch it just right you can load up on the white bass and red eyes. I did see a small gator 4ft half way down stream. No big deal but kool too see.

I want to clarify my statement. My statement was to say... Know what your getting yourself into be cautious and it does pay to prep for the worst. That goes for fishing knee deep in buck bushes or going to a new restaurant in an unknown area. There are Gators and Cottonmouth everywhere.

Yessir. You are right. I’ve also heard there are some deep stump holes down there too. I’ve never had the nerve to wade.

I'm about as back water as anyone in this area. There's a couple full grown gators in Blackwell Swamp (about 10 foot), I've seen a small one in the slough under the I-65 bridge on the north side of the Tennessee River and a small one in the spring hole on the east side of Piney Creek in Mooresville. That's it in 8 years.

FYI, I seemed to run into aggressive Water Moccasins all the time. I hate the damn things, LOL!

The snakes worry me more than the gators. I have seen 1 gator in Limestone bay, 1 back up in Limestone Creek, 3 in Flint Creek and 1 in Crabtree.

I've had a few Water Moccasins think my kayak was a good place to sun. A good whack with the edge of my paddle usually leaves them bully up and twitching.

I worry more about the ones in the grass as I push off the bank or return that I might not see. The ones in the water are easy to deal with.
