Thread: Maybe try Shellcracker?

My crappie fishing this spring has been sub par to say the least. I managed to catch a few last saturday, but they were mostly shorts. But, anyway, I've been kind of wanting to try something else. I like to bass fish too, but I prefer chasing bass at guntersville, and I don't really want to go that far this weekend. So, I've been thinking maybe I'd try shellcracker, or at least "bream" in general. But, I haven't intentionally fished for shellcrackers since I was a kid.

Is Wheeler a decent lake for shellcrackers? It seems like the muscle beds around places like limestone bay would produce, but I don't know. I fish from a kayak, so I can't run up and down the whole lake searching. I need to get pretty close on my first guess. Anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if any of y'all have some shellcracker stories.

Well it has been several, many moons ago but Beulah Bay was always a hotspot for Shellcracker back in the day. Im not sure about now. And I have caught shellcracker in the bay at the boat harbor in Decatur.

Used to catch a bunch at Beulah bay when I was a kid. We would catch them till dark then start catfishing.

I have put in at Decatur boat harbor and went up under the railroad trestle bridge and fished the bank next to railroad tracks and flat wore them out there if that helps you any

The biggest red ears i have caught were in the lake behind the old GM plant on sandy rd. When you put in, follow the channel to the point and there is a spring where the water is about 6 feet deep. There are some big bluegill and crappie in there also.They are all around the spring. It is a grass line you have to go through to get to open water. Hope the Google maps help. Good luck

Thanks! I know that spot, but I've never fished in there. Good to know, it's an option.
