    Default Decent trip last night

My quest to become a true crappie fisherman has so far been very humbling. It started about 3 months ago when I bought an old boat for my son and I to use.

People are still telling me it's a little early for the bite to be really good on Lake Guntersville, but I'm also reading and hearing reports of people hammering them.

I know you can't catch fish if you don't go fishing, so I'm trying to fit at least 2 trips per week into my schedule.

My son was sick last night so me and a buddy went and tried fishing under a bridge. Right about dark the fog rolled in and it was very thick. It blocked the view of the big full moon.

We fished with minnows and the green submersible LED light that I recently got. Those green lights work incredibly well. Shad started showing up within minutes and within and hour there were hundreds if not 1000 swimming in circles under the boat. We caught quite a few stripe, a couple of white bass, one yellow bass, one LM and I caught 5 keeper crappie. We also kept 8 stripe. Every crappie was 10 5/16" long. Exactly. All were caught on minnards.

That looks like a mighty fine catch. Be proud. Crappie fishing is addictive as stated above. The bite is different. One day it will click...maybe it has gauging by your catch from last night. As bcline says, you will learn something new each trip. Mostly, have fun!

P.S. Early morning has worked better for me. But there is something rewarding and peaceful about nighttime fishing.

Thanks for all the replies. This may not make a lick of sense, but I think I can I can feel the feelable bites, it's the line watching that's kicking my butt. Thump or mush I can feel. I'm not quick enough on my hook set yet though. Every trip teaches me a little more. Even if it's just what not to do again.

Looking good! When we go jigging starting Dec we just filet and fry those stripes,,,,no red lines dodo here! They eat great. Know a couple old rednecks that only stripe fish in the spring. They just filet em,fry em,and listen to the people that don't have a mindset brag on the unnamed fish!

Many times, I have been figuratively asleep at the wheel on those very subtle bites only to recognize too late the line is moving...resulting in a missed fish. Key is to keep the slack out of the line. Sometimes the tension of the line is enough to set the hook.

Nice work. Take them how you can right now. I would recommend throwing a jig while fishing the minnows. You might pick up a few extra on the jig. Congrats !
