Lake Guntersville mercury levels

I am a frequent visitor to an Alabama deer hunting website and I saw an advisory posted a month or so ago about high mercury levels in fish in several creeks, then read later than the state advised not to consume more than one fish per month, caught anywhere on Lake Guntersville. Does anyone have the low down on this, or know from past experience when the levels in the fish will return to normal?

I don't want my kids growing a third arm or getting the mad hatter disease.

This has been brought up before and most of us had the same opinion. It can't be any worse that fast food. I'm going to eat fish deep fried anyway so most of use don't care. I think they go overboard on these things. Also these advisorys are on most of Alabama waters.

You also need to look at the species. Different fish hold the contaminants in different sections of their bodies. Crappie are one of the cleanest and less polluted of the species found in our waters. That's what a game warden told me who does these samples and tests.

Also if your just worried about mercury it is in fish naturally. The problem is if they have more than normal. Like Bob said some fish have a larger lateral line and that is where most the mercury is. Fish like stripe bass have a larger lateral line and will hold more. A lot of salt water pelagic fish are very high in mercury like tuna.
