    Default Depth Finder

Looking for a good depth finder to put at my console. One that will read when I'm running down the river. Tried a couple but couldn't get them to pick up. Don't want to break the wallet but want one that will work while running. I have an 18 foot aluminum boat with a 60 yamaha so won't be running fast. Mounted my eye on the right back of the boat but it was a hand me down. May have had the wrong eye. Any suggestions on a good depth finder?

The new Helix 2d/GPS combo might be a good fit, a lot of picking up depth reading while running, if not all of it, is location of transducer. Think you can pick this unit up for under 300.

I have an 18 foot aluminum also, I have yet to find a transducer that will read running on plane. I think there is just too much turbulence coming off bottom
of hull. I am already shooting up a big rooster tail, so I know transducer is in the water.

Going to order a Helix, may try another location with transducer on it

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Is there any way to mount a thru hull transducer on an aluminum boat?

Only one company makes one that I know of, it is called the alumaducer. You can google it.
don't know how good they work or what units they will work with

You would still have to be able to mount it in a location that does not have any air passing under it.

Some things you can try with your present transducer besides lowering the whole transducer farther into the water:
    - lower the back end of the transducer downwards so that it is angled forwards just a little bit (~ 5 degrees max.). This will help shed the aerated water around the transducer versus under it.
    - try adding something as a spacer between the transducer and the hull. The idea here is to get the transducer farther away from the edge of the transom-hull and into more air bubble free water.

Greg, I've got a few questions about my 1198 and 998 and settings. I tried to send you a PM but it wouldn't go. Let me know how I can get ahold of you and take it off line. Thanks.
