The Stripper are on the down side about a month ago I received a e-mail from the state wanted to know if I was in favor of restocking the Stripper in Weiss lake. I voted not to restock, I wonder how many others got this request

Hello Folks! First off, thanks for any insight you can share with me. I am a novice fisherman at best, but I have just booked a home on Weiss Lake for this August. We will be staying near the Spring Creek area. We will have access to a couple of canoes and a kayak. We will be using basic fishing gear, nothing high end. I also realize that August may not be a prime time to be fishing but if you could share any advice or even some really pretty places we could explore we would really appreciate it! THANKS!
Yellow Creek falls, Little Rock City, August is by far the hottest and humid month of the year. All we want is Air Conditioner and lots of it.

I have never fished this lake but wonder is the fishing really declining? Is there hard evidence that there is over harvest? It would seem that if that were the case, Alabama Fish and Game would adjust the rules. We have very few restrictions here in Georgia and have incredible days crappie fishing. They are amazingly prolific and it seems the biggest determining factor on success is skill.
My goodness I had no idea the pressure was that concentrated. I think I will fish elsewhere ....:)
This is a very complicated problem. I agree with reducing the limit to 15 per person, HOWEVER many business owners and guides who I am friends with worry about loss of revenue. The lake is responsible for a lot of the revenue raised for Cherokee County. I also agree with enforcement but there are only 2 game wardens assigned to the county. Adding enforcement would require the state legislature to appropriate more money for enforcement and ask most people if they want taxes raised to pay for it. Last but certainly not least is the invasion of cormorants. These birds are an invasive species and eat huge numbers of fish. I heard renowned angler and TV host, Jimmy Houston state that these birds are the greatest threat to recreational fisherman and fisheries. Of course they are a protected species. Some members of the Weiss Lake Improvement Association are working with the U.S. Dept of Agriculture who is in charge of these species and were close to having an eradication program. A program that me and my shotgun would gladly participate in But PETA got involved and has complicated the issue. I urge all Alabama citizens and others to contact their state legislators and U.S. Congressmen and Senators to address this problem.
Well 6 years ago when this thread was started Weiss was on a down time. Now it seems to be better. Seems like everyone wants it like it was in the 70s an 80s. I just don't think that's ever going to happen. There's to many fishermen now. I'm half the age of a lot of guys on here but I remember as a kid not seeing boats in every creek. The main problem is the amount of people. Weiss is doing pretty good for all the problems it has.

Glenn, there is a lot of truth in what you have said, it will never return to the way it was in the 60, and 70 but the demand part has out ran the supply part.

I understand and I'm afraid a lot of lake have the same future. I can already see it happening on other lakes. Just 10y ago you could catch 100+ on Neely Henry . Now I have to run allover to get a good mess. Weiss already has the large size and it doesn't seem to help. The number of fish may help but I think there's plenty of fish but as soon as they move to a place where they can be fished for there in a cooler.we just have to keep adapting. the Alabama department of fish and game is doing a good job and will take measures when the time comes. They are trying to get the deer back to a good place but people don't want to report the game so what do they do if people don't want to help?

I'm afraid Guntersville is next on the over-fished list. I don't understand the lack of enforcement of the laws on the books. They could make enough money in fines to pay for 2-3 more wardens per county if they'd just enforce the laws already on the books. It doesn't matter if they reduce the limit or not if there's no LEO counting fish in livewells. I have been checked TWO times in my life and both of those were 30 years ago.
The possession limit of crappie is one days creel limit, unless that's changed. Last week on Weiss I saw boats from KY, TN, IL, OH, and GA. If the fishing had been normal for the week, reckon how many of those guys would have gone home with only 30 crappie per person? I'd take a stab and say not a single one. Most people don't even know that there is a possession limit.
I use to take a bream fishing trip to FL every year. Out of staters knew better than to keep over the possession limit. First time I went I saw a couple of GW's at a rest stop waiting on fillets to thaw out so they could be counted. And no that's not a joke, that really happened. FL will bust your tail if you poach their wildlife. If AL's laws had some teeth to them, there would be plenty of fish to go around.
Coach they want people to report there dear harvest so they know how to manage the deer some places have a lot others not so much but people don't want to report it even tho it's the law.

Glenn, I seldom hunt anymore but always buy a license. Last year I killed an old deer with a small rack just to get him out of the gene pool. It was a royal pain to report that deer. Maybe if they would make the process easier more would report their kills. But don't worry there are plenty of them. Turkeys too
Coach I agree with you. I was just comparing it to the fish. People want change but don't want to change what they are doing.

It has to start with us, and report anything you see.

My guess would be like yours, if they checked every out of state fisherman as they crossed the Al state line headed home, most would be busted on the possession law, and my guess would be if they checked the freezers of all the good old Alabama home boys, most of them would be busted by the possession law. The possession laws applies to both out of state and instate law breakers..

In Kentucky, processed fish do not count towards possession limit.
Stop pimping out our fish, for cash would be a good start. I fish after dark for the most part for crappie Hard to fish the Jackson county area ,way to many bass turnaments and they don't mind blowing you off the water. Fishing these days is like fishing in a washing machine.
Other states laws have no bearing in Alabama. This excerpt was taken from an online copy of AL fish and game laws.
- The creel and possession limits provided for above shall not apply to fish held live for release by the sponsor or its designated agent after a bona fide fishing tournament provided they are released unharmed to the public waters from which they were taken as soon as reasonably possible on the same day they were taken. This does not obligate the sponsor or its designated agent to release dead or dying fish.
- Total length of fish measured from the front of the mouth to the tip of the tail with both mouth and tail closed.
- It is a violation of Alabama law for any person to transport more than one day’s creel limit of any species of fish beyond the boundaries of this state. (I added the bold font) It is a violation of Alabama law for any person to fillet freshwater fish while on public waters except when fish are being prepared for immediate cooking and consumption, provided however, that fish may be drawn or gutted with heads left attached.
- It shall be unlawful for any angler to fish with more than three rods and reels, or poles, or any combination thereof on Weiss Reservoir or Neely Henry lakes at any time.
- There is no closed season on any freshwater game fish.
- It shall be unlawful to fish any trotline, snag or snare line without plastic or metal tag attached containing the owners name and either their address, fishing license number or phone number.
- It shall be unlawful for any fisherman other than a licensed commercial fisherman to fish one or more trotline, snag or snare line or combination thereof containing more than 100 hooks total
The text in the bold font seems pretty clear to me.
Don’ bet on it! You have greedy people from everywhere but most of us good old home boys watch our self’s we were taught better.
