Thread: No crappie in Lake Oliver

In all my 40+ years of fishing, I don't remember ever going crappie fishing and catching NONE! Especially right before, during, or after the spawn. I was flabbergasted.
I fished deep, I fished shallow, I fished in-between, I trolled with jigs and minnows, crappie crankbaits, jig and minnow combinations, many colors, sizes, types...all for nothing.
I did have fun catching those bass, though. Most of them were caught on a Wally Marshall blue and white crankbait. Water temp. was 65 in the river, and 70 to 75 in the coves and creeks. I fished Standing Boy Creek and the bridge there for 3 hours... nary a nibble.
The wife joined me at 4:00 p.m., and all she caught was a baby bream and a hybrid bass...on redworms. She was crappie fishing, too, but because they weren't biting, we both were fishing for other fish too, just to make our trip a little more enjoyable. We did have fun, but we both came to the same conclusion:
Lake Oliver is not the place to go for crappie.

I've never had much luck at Oliver except spotted bass. I thought it was me.

It doesn't make sense why a body of water like Lake Oliver has a poor fish population. May be a lack of vegetation for some reason, and young fry have nowhere to hide. Or pollution of some sort has thinned them out. Whatever the reason, it could be fixed with a solid fishery management program. Seems to me the place is being ignored by DNR, but I may be wrong. Like I said, I'm new to the area. Meanwhile, I'll fish elsewhere. Happy Fishing!
