Good job and nice catches. Pretty crappie, don't look roughed up.

Yesterday was the first sunny calm day in about 10 days and the level is still rising and just under flood stage looked around in known staging areas and found nothing but tiny fish. Knew I had to look at first spawning ground even though much of it is in flooded timber which was dry land in February. Bingo fish have gone there by the moon apparently even in spite of all the other factors.

Very nice sir! Do you have a number goal this year?

The level should make for another very successful spawn again this year and Tuesday is almost a fishing required day.

Reluctant to set a number goal, but I will soar mouth as many as I can. Probably only 20 will come home.

Those are really nice, the male is certainly ready to go with those colors. Curious what you mean by tiny crappie. I thought Cali crappie were hatched and already weigh a lb. When they are that big it only takes a couple for a meal.

They do grow very fast here for sure, but even at that they have a lifecycle. It may be much accelerated here where I have personally observed schools of millions of 1" crappie. This stage obviously has a low survival rate. The next stage I have observed is in much smaller numbers of 5 to 8 inch fish not mature enough for spawning and very skinny, like almost translucent. These are the fish left in the area just vacated by the mature nest building ones. I'm not a biology student but I think they might be ready to spawn here at 2 years old and that 5 year old fish are between 2lb and 3lb.

This is not me and not my photo, but it was caught the day after my post in the same water that I had the breakoffs!
