No mention of water temps lends one to consider the area where these two gentlemen fish (Gulf Coast area), so it is possible that these fish could have been "fanning" recently and got moved off by changing weather conditions.

I thought the males built the nests

Edit: maybe the male and female makes the nest then the male guards it while the female is farther away

Crappie do most certainly fan. Maybe not in the same sense of a bream or bass as far as making deep depressions. In the flood lakes there are year's without structure or grass to lay eggs in. We catch male's and females (males more so) with damaged tail fins every spring. Another thing is they don't always spawn shallow either.

Males do indeed make the nests, and the females are not involved in that process (From what I've heard/read). The females deposit eggs into many different nests during the course of spawning, so as not to have their entire brood depending on one male to guard.

In videos I've seen of mating pairs of Crappie, both are side by side and bumping sides while the eggs/milt are being dropped into the nest. If other males or other species attempt to interrupt the process, the male will attempt to drive them off by biting or ramming the intruder.

Nothing like that in the Rivers here or backwaters in areas out of the river flow. Now the females spray on structure & males guard but fanning but a depression on the bottom to spawn in, not that I have ever seen river fishing.

I fish the same river systems from time to time.

These eggs were from a week ago in that same river systems. And those that I cleaned that had eggs were even closer this past Saturday.
What’s the old saying? “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Should have taken another snapshot and will if I go back.
But nothing running out of any females I caught yet.
