The year is coming to a close and it’s about the time have a year in review on the crappie fishing.
Overall the fishing was very good. I focused more on catching good eaters than just hunting down super big ones. I caught a few nice 2.5 lbers but most stayed in the range of a pound to pound and half.
I know there’s a lot of talk on FFS hurting the fishing and I’m sure there are lakes that are affected in Mississippi for sure. In my area I still have lakes over populated. The crappie are stunted and haven’t changed size in 3 years. We don’t have in my area what’s considered a great crappie lake, there’s crappie there but you have to search and find them.
Something I learned this year and I always try to learn something on the water but big mature crappie are completely different than average crappie. Once the temps get up coming out of spring. This is just my opinion fishing lakes that I know have 2.5 to 3 lb crappie but they disappear during the summer. My lakes are not deeper than 10 ft and many are shallow around 5 ft. But those big slabs disappear.
Where do they go? Straight to the bottom IMO. I have caught a few off the bottom , I don’t normally look for them on the bottom as others will suspend and stage off stobs and I’ll look for them. But those big ones I believe go into sleep mode and if you find one on the bottom it may take a bit to get her to bite. I’ve fished for 3 hrs trying to get at least a 3 lber to bite and never got her to bite. I tried every jig I had, every profile and she just would not bite. And this was during the summer.

Some lakes on west-central parts of the state have took a hit . Never been so many fishing as in last several years . Those 3 pounders are rare in most areas and they are just super lucky or least aggressive fish in my opinion .
