We fished Saturday and Sunday, unfortunately the bite was very slow. But my son and I had a blast, good conversation and started a casting accuracy competition all in all it was a wonderful weekend.

He did land a couple small bluegills and what I’m pretty sure was a yellow bass.

Yessir ... Yellow Bass is correct. Scrappy little demons !! Looks like the kiddo has it under control in that picture, but best he be cautioned about the Ginsu Knife gill covers (that can slice you open in a heartbeat) and the dorsal spines (that get raised & held when fish is handled) which can also stab a hole in you in an instant. Both are most dangerous when the fish is struggling & thrashing about while you're trying to unhook the fish.

That little fish was tugging like crazy, he was so excited thinking he had a big crappie. He wants to get on a big school of fish so bad however I’m so proud that he doesn’t let the lack of finding fish discourage him and he stays very positive.

Interesting, something did cut/poke him and he was positive it wasn’t the spine. Thanks for the info.

Iffn you get in a school of them yeller buggers it can be exciting. They are tasty too. Good job to y’all

If you have yellow perch on that area, their gill covers have the same ability to inflict damage.
We've all been there and learned the hard way, LOL!

Great thing about a boat is being able to hit different areas and anchor when fish are found. Just be sure to have a 10 or 15# anchor because a 15-20 mph wind makes it difficult to hold to an area especially when you locate a school.

Let me start by saying that the jig is one of the best inventions to have ever been discovered to catch fish - bar none! Many soft plastic lures of all sizes and shapes can be rigged on them to catch all sorts of fish. Today was another learning experience for me: cactching fish on soft plastics that I haven't used in years to catch close to 90 fish.

Tools: 1/24 oz and 1/32 oz ballhead jgs (unpainted of course)
hook sizes: #6, #4 - used depending on lure size
8# test braid line
Plastics used that will up your chances:

I hadn't used curl tail grubs in quite a while and figured, why not try some in different colors and sizes? SHABANG! Many fish caught:
White and yellow perch, sunfish and crappie pounded them!!
3" and 1" curl tails like the ones shown below got hit hard!


Most crappie were 9.5" -10"; this one was 11"

Another surprise was the mini-tube (similar to your red ones). I like chartreuse.
This small tube caught everything:


Messing around, I rigged a grub body minus the tail - looked kinda like a pill - but it had a nice wobble on the slowest retrieve when rigged on a 1/32oz jig:



A Runcle Swimbait rigged on a 1/24 oz jig did well and even caught a pickerel:




Mann's Shadow caught some nice crappie when rigged on a 1/32 oz jig./ #4 hook.

Anyone can catch fish on these lures and I mean anyone! Cast in shallow water near weeds or parallel to the bank. These lures are fish finders and pattern finders (similar fish locations).
Work them slow and get ready for fireworks!
