Do you have a pic or brand name of the UV yarn you bought at Walmart by any chance?

Defiantly taking my UV light with me on my shopping spree's from now on. Even if I'm not necessarily looking for tying materials, I can spot check on some things as I go from one area of the store to an other, and sorta purposely pass through the sporting goods and craft section on a detour from the can goods isle to the meat section...lol...

It was a large roll with about 8 different neon colors for a couple of bucks. I like the stuff for chenile because it really sucks up the Slab sauce. I also used the chartreuse yellow to mark my rods for lengths. They came with markings, but I don’t see them when needed. Now can’t miss seeing them. And a piece of pink and one yellow indicate which life vest is mine and which is hers.

    Thank you for your contribution

I wonder if it is the same yarn I already have then. I don’t have a light to check but the yarn I bought was several colors together.

And by the way the yellow from this yarn was on the jig as tail material when I caught my PB! I also have some bright green yarn that’s pretty as well. Thanks for sharing

So yesterday I was out on a local lake at O’ Dark Hundred. The sky was overcast and there was some fog about. Kind of gloomy like Transylvania. Anyways I get the first rod rigged and as I stretch it out in front of me preparing to place it in the holder, I noticed the sinker. It was glowing like crazy from 16 feet away. The white paint and UV Blast combination leaves me seeing a faintly purple color. They really stood out. I didn’t think to take a picture- sorry. I did lower one of the sinkers to just under the surface and it was still obviously glowing underwater. No idea how deep that continued but most all of my local lakes are very shallow anyways.

So.... on bright sunny days we get UV reflections, but we cannot see these colors being reflected off certain objects because the visible light is dominant. Visible light is the 1,000 pound gorilla in the room. We see greens and reds and blues because they are more intense. However, when conditions change and visible light lessens we are able to begin to see the UV reflections. The treated objects appear to glow. So we can figure this effect works underwater about the same as it does above water. Be small differences, but when visible light lessens, UV light can emerge.

So....UV light is reflecting all the time, but only during low light are we finally able to see it.

Predator fish are most active during first light and last light conditions. I suspect this is so because they are able to use UV light to their advantage. Apparently it is quite an advantage as well. Guessing here, but I suspect it allows them to better see exactly where the minnows are at. Perhaps it even allows them to approach closer before being spotted by the minnows making it easier to capture them.

I do not think UV light is the be all to end all, but it is certainly something that is readily available for us fishermen to use. There is something to all of this. It is up to us to determine how we can exploit the sources of light available. We know flashy sparkly things work on bright sunny days in clear water.....well UV light works when those conditions are not dominant. The less sunny the more important UV becomes.

    During regular daylight we see....

We know that some fish use UV light to identify mates and find food, and there are insects and mammals that are adapted to using UV light. Makes sense to me that some species learned how to exploit what is naturally in their enviroment. The really big question is....can we figure out how to exploit it.

I have read and watched videos where, at times, the really bright light emitted by the straight painted jigs have made fish turn-away. I wonder if maybe adding non-UV paint to it might dull it down and make it appear more subtle, maybe more natural to the fish...
