Ketchn, could you post a picture of the quill float you like? Is it the natural porcupine quill float? If so isn't that hard to see in water?

please feel free to add your 2 cents on how you like to pitch a float in the spring time .
my personal preference is pitching my rig diagonally across bedding areas and slow dragging it back to me .
i almost 99.99% of the time use a pinch on "quill" type float in the smallest size that will still float with whatever weight jig is under it .
i often step up to 8 lb or even 10 lb mono because of the pinch point and possibly big fish that "might" be the next one .
lets hear everyone elses go to float pitching techniques

When I use floats I typically use a thill like those from Walmart or the ESB float. I have found that one to be my favorite so far. I typically don't use floats much.

i will when i have time , actual porcupine quills were the thing at one point in time . the folks i know that used them painted a red or orange ring around them .
but thill and comal and eagle claw and a few others make similar "quill" type floats and or some call them pencil floats .
as mentioned last night on the live presentation ,the slim design allows them to go under the water easier than other designs when a strike occurs .
less resistance to going down is the king when it comes to float pitching for crappie for sure![]()

have all types and depends on how shallow the fish are holding. IF right up against shallow water I simply use my long poles to tight line right thru them and I have my high boots on and wade along. if deeper then I will use thill pencil and I have quite a variety. Like the bobbers but prefer long poles and tight lines myself in spawning situations.

That float fishn is just flat out fun and a fixed pencil style float is what works best for me.......
I use the ESB floats and really like them. This year I plan on using my Livescope to target structure and my clients using minnows under bobbers over said cover.
