    Default Perry County Lake?

Hi all, new member here. My dad and I used to fish for crappie many many years ago. Last few years I have been primarily bass fishing but my dad is wanting to get back into fishing (buying a boat this week) and crappie was always his main passion.

He was wanting to go somewhere close (to St. Louis) this weekend to fish. I fish for bass at Perry County Lake but don't know much about the crappie there. What little info I can find, I have read there are a bunch of little ones there but not much size. That would probably be fine for my dad's first trip out in the boat, I think for him getting back into it numbers are more important than size.

If anyone can give me the lowdown on Perry County and let me know if it would be worth a quick drive down from St. Louis, that would be great. We actually live in Jefferson County (south part of the St. Louis area) so it is a quick drive for us.

I usually fish Perry lake a couple times a year when I dont want to fight the lake fleas in the summer but like you I mostly fish it for bass. I tried for crappie last year and did catch some but they were all around 5 inches long or smaller. I caught them casting jigs around the aerators.

Tons of crappie in that lake, but as stated most are very small. I have caught a few 9-10" fish but very few and far between. There is flooded timber throughout basically the entire lake that holds fish. Good luck.

Thanks so much everyone! Exactly the info I was looking for, and confirms what I had heard. The weekend my dad first gets his boat, he's going to be looking or somewhere relatively close to us that he can putter around, and a bonus would be to catch a few crappie. I know he'll be happy to be back catching anything, so size isn't as much of an issue for this first trip out.

Clearwater Lake in Piedmont has been producing some nice crappie this year. It's not too far from St. Louis
