When pulling jigs I like my tips 10 inches off top of water. this requires a pretty good down angle. I use rod floats for insurance as lots of different people fish with my equipment. I also wrap the rod handle with the tape that comes on aluminum baseball bat. this protects the foam and the suface has twice the grip in a rod holder from pulling out the back of the boat.

What is the advantage of the rod tips being so close to the water while pulling?

helps to keep your spread consistent. In the sun and rougher water the tip movement is easier to see.
I fish the spyder lock on a friends boat, WAY better than my dripmaster setup. Less wiggle and totally adjustable.

What Baitwaster said. Also allows jig to run deeper with less line out the back of boat. The more line you have out the easier it is to lose a good quality fish.

This is the model I use. Gives you two rod angles and more space to maneuver handle.

Attached is a sketch of something simple you can do to help keep the rod from pulling out and not have to put the reel inside the holder. Basically tape a bolt (shown in green) onto the rod handle in either of the 2 locations shown....

I have spider locks and my only issue is being able to tighten them to their bases. I tighten to the point of stripping the threads and they still seem to vibrate or move around when placing a rod in them. Inserting one rod makes them all shake.

Is the collar tight that allows for the 3 settings for height? If so maybe loosen it and lower it a notch and retighten

I run driftmasters and spyderlocks. I have my spyderlocks to the sides of my toon and run my rod tips inches from the water. I have a galvanized pipe as a trolling bar with driftmasters. I point these shorter poles down towards the water. I think searay is correct on this. Keep reel behind forks but just lift from in front of holder forks to remove rod.Name: IMG_7622.jpg
