In my opinion your focus should be more about the house as opposed to which lake, make sure it has lots of guests bedrooms or even a studio above the garage so you can invite all your crappie.com family over! ?*??

Ok looking for a little help if anyone would be so kind. The wife and I have been going to Ky lake every year for the last 10-12 years. Stayed predominately around the Big Bear area. But also stayed at Cypress Bay on the KY/TN line as well as Paris Landing and Springville in TN. Been to Reelfoot lake also. We think we have our hearts set on retiring and moving to the KY lake area somewhere between Benton KY to Paris Landing area. HOWEVER we would like to test the waters at a couple other lakes before deciding. I have about 3 more years before I retire. We were thinking about making a visit to Green River lake or Barren River lake. We mainly fish for crappie, but close second is bluegill, white bass, yellow bass. Of those 2 lakes which would you recommend? I really think I like what I read about Green River. I am certain it is hard to beat Ky lake but I just would like to try a couple different areas before I commit. We are choosing an area in close proximity to a lake. I want to retire and live out my days fishing. Nowhere close to a big city.
Also on my thinking list was Nolin lake, Rough River lake, Dale Hollow lake and Old Hickory lake. Please share your thoughts, good and bad, on any of these lakes.
Thanks in advance for any info you share.
Crappie spawning and morels popping up at the same time. What was God thinking when he made that schedule. It's pure torture every spring deciding which to do.

Gotta think about access to quality health care when you pick a place to retire. We bought our retirement home on KY lake 25 minutes east of Murray, KY and 50 minutes south of Paducah. Lakes like Dale Hollow are pretty far from a decent sized town. The TN portion of KY lake is pretty remote well except for Paris.
All that being said, the crappie and bass fishing on KY lake is not so good lately due to the Asian carp invasion, hoping for better days ahead.

Barren is my local lake so I can chime in on that one. I have also visited KY Lake yearly for about the last 25 yrs.
Barren has great crappie, bluegill and some awesome hybrid fishing. It is a flood resevoir so dealing with major depth fluctuations sucks.
Real Estate wise the prices are great at Barren but steadily climbing. Glasgow and Bowling Green are both 30 mins or less from Barren so anything you could ever need is a short drive away.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have about this area.

If you can make it to the Spring Fling on May 4th, you'd get a good idea of what fishing at Green is like.
Campbellsville and Columbia are the closest large cities, and they ain't all that big either. If you chose Campbellsville, you'd be just North of the lake and closer to the wider area of the lake. If you chose Columbia, you'd be South of the lake and closer to the river end of it. Also Columbia is between Green & Cumberland ... and Cumberland Crappie are more in line with KY Lake size fish.
While I agree that the house & location should be top priority, at either of these two lakes you won't have the Asian Carp problem to deal with, like you would at KY/Barkley. Can't help you on the other lakes mentioned.

Yes I agree that crappie fishing has declined over the years that I have been going down there. And I assure you it sure as heck isn't from me over harvesting. LOL. I do good to get a limit. And I have seen a HUGE increase in the Asian carp. But I think, hope everything will cycle back in. We won't be getting a place right on a lake. Out of my budget. We just want a small house or trailer within an 30 to45 minute drive. Nuttin fancy for us.
Thanks for the feed back.

Thank you for the reply. We are not 100% certain where we are going to land but we are 90% certain of it being KY/TN area. But we just want to be somewhere close to some fishing and out of this cold. I know you get some snow, ice and cold in KY/TN but nothing like northern IL. I may pick your brain a little more about Barren. We are going to schedule a few days to a week to try a couple different lakes this year. I was leaning towards Green but Barren looks good too.
Again thanks.
Oh I see you are a Marine. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Yes I was thinking the same thing. I have a pretty flexible schedule and can usually get away whenever I need. Green is definitively a lake I want to check out. We are not bass fisherman. Mainly panfish, and we also like to catfish. We just like to fish. My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Bullshoals Lake many many years ago. She likes fishing as much (probably more) than I do. All of our vacations and trips pretty much evolve around fishing.
We are not looking for a fancy house or a big house. We want a small house or a trailer. We don't want to spend our time cleaning and maintaining a large house. We are not fancy people.
I looked at a couple of the resorts at Green. What can you tell me about the one with the floating cabins? And I assume the one where the fling is happening is good?
Thanks for the feedback. This is the kind of info I am looking for.
