I've camped there since I was a kid. The deer are a draw for the park. They have been over populated for a while. In the spring, summer and fall there are enough campers feeding them and enough food in the woods. Winter time no food and no campers it's sad. I wish they would organize a handicap hunt or a youth hunt. I know it's like shooting pets but needs to be done

I have not seen them in person but from the pictures and how old Ree's said they were a another thread, they are not it good shape. The limpy or what ever you call him, is no where near where he should be for his age.
Maybe a youth hunt would go over better.

No sense in you guys getting your panties all knotted up over this. Biologist have decided this is what they are going to do so it will be done. Undoubtly they see this as the best way to handle the situation. Dosnt really matter what they call it. Some disagree with the verbiage but I think all would agree something needs to be done. I have my opinion but not going to verbalized it here. Like Ree's said just more internet fodder for the anti's to feed off. You have a real concern let the guys in charge hear from you. But don't be lambasting those folks unless you can offer a better solution. Looks like we would have learned our lesson in the last few years on the crappie situation.
That's way away from me but I tell ya I've seen first had what chronic wasting disease can do if that starts it will spread to the wild deer around there. Believe me it will totally decimate a deer population for mile

Will it help?
The owner of Dabb's pawn shop had a federal/state permit to keep 2 deer in a 16 ft tall pen as pets. I was told it was 3 acres. During hunting season he put orange jackets on them. He has video of a neighbor coming from his house, shooting both deer than returning to his house. He contacted every branch of law enforcement to hear, oh well.

I helped ages ago at the Butla handicap, youth hunts. It's not really a hunt, get the person to a blind before daylite to shot the first thing that's seen. If a hunt will be at Cossar have it at Jones Creek campgound since it's an open area and can be closed to camping during that time of the year.
I'd help if I could get a free campsite or cabin while there.
I've read this entire thread, and some good points have been made here. But let's not lose sight of the fact that reducing the herd size will be good for deer in the long run. The game biologists in the State have obviously identified and researched the problem and realize that it has to be done. They have spent years in education and training in game management, and this is what this is. Those of you who have been deer hunting for years remember you were only allowed to kill one buck per season. The legal kill has steadily increased over the years to what it is now. Game Management and conservation is why we have hunting seasons anyway. I'll bet it's a sad sight to go in that Park in the dead of a bad Winter and see the deer scrounging for food with no campers there.
Like Rees said, we shouldn't go around running our mouth bad-mouthing the wildlife people and some bleeding hear it run to a newspaper or TV station. After the MSM gets hold of it, Mississippi is killing pet deer in the Park! Let's leave it alone and let Larry Castle and his people handle it. They can justify it and respond to it better than any of us can!![]()
