It is true with most things but... "You will miss every fish you do not set the hook on." Had a partner years ago when I used to green carp fish that would wait and wait and wait to set the hook. I asked him what is he is waiting on and he said to make sure the fish has it. I told him that fish do not have hands. Stick the fish.

The first time we went out the only major difference in my setup and his was line. I thought he was nuts but he has professed time and time again the line he is using is the biggest part. This time out I had the same line, rod and a different reel. Like the first time out he provided the jigs. Saturday morning we caught exactly the same number of keepers and I had even a few more under 9 inches than he. I'm not trying to toot a horn and say I kicked his butt, but I had serious crappie fishing depression since the first time out and this overall was an enlightening experience for me. I was exhausted when I came home and was falling asleep watching the new Warcraft movie on DVD, I literally caught myself setting the hook a few times while drifting off to sleep in the chair. I had a great day of jig fishing and I'm hooked on it!
This old guy knows our lake pretty good and he took me to places he and his crappie buddies have names for, like finger, cochran, small rock, flat rock etc, and I ate it up like a kid in a candy store. He has no secrets and when he tells me why is, really is, I'm a firm believer now!

now the hard part will be maintaining your integrity, and keeping those spots to yourself. .

in very clear water line can make a difference, at times. it can also make a big difference in relating to death, action and speed. that mite have been the biggest part.

never leave out scent! that can make the difference in a look and a hook, some days! thats just purist'bs.

I have a friend that is a fishing guide. I go on practice trips with him from time to time and he always kicks my butt. What I learned from him is tiny details make the difference. He has one spot that the larger line diameter you use the less you will get bit. I used 4lb while I had on 8lb. He told me in advance but I thought I knew what I was doing. He caught outfished me 4 to 1. He also taught me how to fish shallow brush during the spawn. He picks it apart like a surgeon while I was just pitching and flipping at random. He taught me how to pick a piece of cover apart before you move on. Pay attention to the small details and you will catch on quickly.

I assume you are fishing straight down with the jigs in brushpiles. Make sure you are up front next to him fishing same general area where the brush is. Make sure the jig is lowered to the exact same depth. And, if it is like it was for me two weeks ago, if I didn't hold that jig as still as possible and not jig it around, I would not catch anything. Hard to do for an ex green carp guy like me but it was the only way to get those fish to bite. We caught a good mess of them and won a small tournament.

Sounds like you might be getting being brother-in-lawed That means fishing from the back of the boat while the guy in the front fishes everything first and knows the good spots. I really am just kidding I would just watch his presentation and use what jig you have confidence in once you establish a pattern you may be catching more than him LOL have fun and if you have to get right over his front shoulder and get about ear to ear with him stick your jig where ever he sticks his.Now sometimes this doesn't work if not I hope you can swim Good fishing to you sir!!!
